Another oil sample/mileage between oil changes report
Hey guys, just thought I would share the results from my first Blackstone Labs oil sample report and general thoughts.
I took delivery of my truck Dec 2016. I did my first oil change mid april of 2017 at 4230 miles. I used Motorcraft 5W40 Full synthetic. The next oil change was done at 10060 miles on Aug 9, 2017. I did a substantial amount of towing during this first 10k miles. On Dec 21, 2017, I changed the oil again at 18802 miles, using Motorcraft 5W40 Full syn. The truck was driven at temperatures as low as -25, and was used again for nearly half of the approx. 8800 miles between Aug 9 and Dec 21 towing loads between 5k pounds and 13k pounds. Forscan lite showed the miles to oil change to be EXACTLY 10k after my previous oil change, but I decided to change it at 8800 instead of waiting for the intelligent oil minder to pop up. I sent a sample of this oil off to blackstone labs. The report is attached. As you can see, they say the 8800 miles is a fine interval to use going forward and I can even possibly push it another couple thousand miles.
I'm going to be swapping to Shell Rotella T6 5W40 on the next oil change due to such good prices on the Rotella, but I'm super happy with the report I got and will continue to have my oil sampled.

I installed the EZ drain valve on my first oil change. It's excellent. These valves are the only way to go for sure. It didn't take them long to get my report to me. They sent it via email.

The second column is averages of my samples, so as I send in more, they will factor into that number.

Each time you send a sample in for the same UNIT, another column is filled. The unit/location average column is just that - average for all samples sent in for that unit.

You're missing some information that you should keep track of for extended service intervals. I recommend paying a little extra and getting the TBN, TAN, and ISO Code.
TBN - Total Base Number is a measure of how much antiwear additives are in the oil
TAN - Total Acid Number is how much acid is in the oil. This will cause oxidation and break down the viscosity. You viscosity is fine but if you want to go more miles between drain intervals you will see this increase before the viscosity breaks down
ISO Code - Is a measure of the particle content of the oil. This is one of the most important things to keep track of. Here is a link to a good explanation of the code numbers:

I've been running synthetic oils for 12,000 miles without any problems in a gas engine and could go longer, but I don't have any idea how long it can run in a diesel.

Although they said I could consider going 12K miles before the next change, I'll follow the IOLM. This sample was the factory 10W/30 Motorcraft, but I switched to PSB 5W/40.
