460 MPG: Pro's & Con's of C-6 Swap to E4OD behind a Carb'd 460

Hey guys!

Its been a long time since I was on this site but within the last few months I picked up a new toy! A 1969 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed (From Factory!). Has a running 460 with a c-6. My previous baby which I just sold (72 f250) had a c6 as well and I always enjoyed cruising on the freeway until I noticed my gas gauge moved faster than my tach....

I am wanting to do a swap, maybe down the road cummins, but for a more immediate solution, some type of over drive. I want that extra gear because I believe it will improve the mpg in the truck since id like to use her (freedom69) as my daily driver...

Now before the "go by a prius for mpg" posts start I know it may sound ridiculous to try and get any mpg out of a 460. With that being said, I only want to get above 10-12 on the freeway and have a conversation with a passenger without screaming at them. And I am open to other ideas for improving mpg however already done some mods here and there. Thinking the OD will be the best over all improvement.

Now with that out of the way, I have read other posts but they all seem to fall flat on their face after 1-2 nay sayers and eh so here we go.

Option 1- Buy a prius and hate life evening knowing your leaving a small carbon footprint...
Option 2- C6 with a gear vendor add on ($2k-3k before install?, rebuild trans $$$)
Option 3- E4OD swap (used trans out of 95 f350 460 - 80kmiles $200, us shift kit standalone controller $690, new attometer elec speedo - $100, shorten drive shaft $150ish?)

Lets hear what you guys think! Thanks in advance!

The E4OD is much like the AOD. In stock form, not so great. Rebuilt with with better parts, they are good transmissions.

Do it.

E4od is as good a tranny as anything. It has its limits sure, but a mild 460 isn't going to stress it THAT much. After all, they hold up behind tuned 7.3 diesels. And the 4R100 is a great transmission, which is just an updated E4OD.

Although, my preferred option in a truck that big would be a ZF5 manual.

I say do it. I have a 460 with 4R70W and Holley Terminator EFI in my 64. I average 12-15mpg on the highway, I can cruise along at 70-75mph and run 2100-2300RPM.

I also say do it with an E4OD. That's been rebuilt professionally with 4R100 parts. A local transmission shop will already know how to build it for you. You might not even have to buy a JY E4OD 1st. A tranny shop may already have a core E4OD for them to start with. Their core charge may even be cheaper than the $200 one you found.
The 4R100's were good trannys. Most people never read their truck's owners manual. Ford wanted 4R100 owners to NOT tow or haul heavy weight with the 4R100 in overdrive. Which is why there is a tow/haul (overdrive Off) mode switch on the end of the shifter. Also diesel owners put programmers in their PCM's that boost the diesel's power a ton. Then haul heavy weight up a 6% grade passing cars. In overdrive. Via the torque converter, which is in the middle of the engine power and the heavy load, the 4R100's fluid gets SUPER hot. Cooking the 4R100. None of this was engineered in to the 4R100's design parameters.

Yall should read this article on a E4OD swapped into a '73 F350 with a 460.

E40D Transmission Swap - Hot Rod Network

Of course review the pictures and accompanying captions.

Hmm i have been thinking about this particular swap in my 68 250 for quite awhile now. I found a tranny place that might fit the bill. They upgrade known problems with stronger parts and seem to be honest about what they are putting into their tranny's. Performance Transmissions. (Hope i did the link thing correctly) An adapter is sold also if you want to go that route. Twisting a 460 to 3000 on the highway gets me about maybe 200 miles out of a tank so that is why i have been looking at these transmissions for awhile now. I have had the link in my favorites for awhile now but haven't had a credit card with a high enough limit to get this sent to my door. Good luck and i hope you find what your looking for.

Can you show me an owner's manual that actually states that? The E4ODand 4R100 were designed to tow in overdrive.

Neither of them had a tow/haul mode. They did have a button to turn off overdrive, and if you read the manual it states two reasons to use the button. The first reason is to provide more engine braking. The second is to eliminate excessive shifting in and out of overdrive, which can happen in some conditions. In the later 4R100s the software was improved which mostly eliminated this problem.

Hey, 72AP, can you answer a few questions for us about your 69 F-350 CC. What is your GVW, and does it have a Dana 60 in the rear? And can you also give the body code on the driver door warranty plate? This is a poll to help answer a question about a very recent thread on F-350 CCs.

I've talked with a few guys who used a 700R4 behind a 460 and were pretty satisfied with the results.

I had a 700R4 behind a 6.2 GM diesel and at 100K installed a Gail Banks Turbo kit till I sold the truck (K5 Blazer) with 230K on it. I did like the low first gear ratio for pulling heavy loads like my car trailer.

Now I take it the OP does not want to do this a 2nd time for the diesel swap. Has he looked into what trany he will be using for that? Could it be a C6 with an adapter plate? I would think someone makes one?
With the EOD will it live behind the diesel swap? That is if they even make an adapter plate for it. How much beefing $$$$ would it take to live with the 460 and the diesel?

I don't think it would take much $$ to beef up a C6 for either motor..........but what about OD you ask?
Hook a Gear Vender unit behind the C6 as it can take it with either motor so no need to change out when going to a diesel.
