flywheel suggestions for an internally balanced 460 swapped into an 85 F250

hello everyone!

I'm working on my old work truck, Sanford, which is an 85 f250 that was originally offered with a 460/ 4 speed, but sometime in it's life, got an engine swap.

here's what I know.

the Heads are D2VE heads.

here is the block casting numbers
Attachment 286585

Here is the spacer behind the harmonic balancer.
Attachment 286586

I also verified that it does have a 3.85" stroke, so that puts it at a 460. I will check the crank casting number in the morning, as I'm guessing it will help out.

My issue is that i'm now questioning if i have the right flywheel or not. I never noticed any engine vibrations while driving, but the old flywheel that i removed today will more than likely not be able to be surfaced, and so i was going to buy a replacement. The clutch that was on it was a 12" clutch, and i'd like to stay with a 12" if possible (truck sees a lot of towing). I'm looking for suggestions, what to get a flywheel for to match the engine?

360 and 390 flywheels were to my knowledge never were drilled for a 12" so you would have to find one and see if someone could drill it for you.
New ones are expensive because no one has ever cast one that I've found anyways, aftermarket and Ford's are billit.

Working with a 460, not an FE block. but i will keep that info in mind when i get to swapping a 5 speed into my 66 ford.

The truck is an 85, and there was a factory option for a 12" clutch with an 85 460 setup.

No such option.*
You need a flywheel, where will you get one for a internally balanced 460 since Ford never offered it?

All 1968/82 460's came with the C6.

What some people do, is use the 352/360 (11" clutch) or 390 (11 1/2" clutch) flywheel.

*1983/86 460 flywheel: 11" .. 1987/97 460 flywheel: 12."

In the picture there is no hatchet weight on the front of the crank which means it should have the older unweighted flywheel. FE flywheels bolt right on a 460 and are unweighted so lots of people use them on the older 460's only problem like Bill has said there is no 12".
The problem with you using this '85 flywheel on your motor is it will be weighted. Aftermarket cast the later models weighted flywheels, so they can be bought dirt cheep. I have no idea why no one will cast one that will take a 12" and bolt to FE & 385's motors ? I went through that when I switched over, in the end I just bit the bullet and payed the $300 for the billet Ford neutral balanced 12". It is a nice piece though.

all interesting note. NumberDummy, when i pulled apart my current setup, it had a 12" clutch on it, and when you look up an 85 F250 with a 460 on rockauto's website, they show listings for the 12" clutch and flywheel.

But regardless, it is the wrong weight of flywheel for the engine's balance. I cant put it back on. and really, the truck is not a high dollar hot rod, i cant justify a billet one like mark A. bought with this project. maybe once i put my Tbird together.

I did find a solution. I'm just going to swap to a externally balanced 460!! I just happen to have one that I pulled from a 78 Coachman camper this summer!!

1978 would not have an external balanced 460 unless the engine was swapped...because the external balanced 460 wasn't available until mid-year 1979.

The 460 block casting number for external balance is: D9TE-6015-AB

Block casting number for 1971/78 and some 1979 460 internal balance: D1VE-6015-AB or A1B or A2B

i will verify the block numbers on the engine once i get it up on the stand, all i know is that the coachman title said 78, and there is the external weight behind the harmonic balancer on this engine.

Thank you for the insight, i'll definitely check it.

I’m curious how that is attached to that sleeve collar, and does anyone know if someone on this forum might have built a 429/460 engine with an external oil pump and drove that pump behind the balancer instead in front using a mandrel bolted to the front of the balancerI have seen these big blocks both ways with different configurations, the one moroso builds has a sizable base that I’m not sure will work without an aftermarket pulley

Old thread, but you can have any machine shop neutral balance a weighted flywheel from a '87+ truck so you can use it on an internally balanced engine. I have one sitting in my garage I had done.
