p0420 & p0430

Jut purchased a used 2014 f250 6.2L. 90,000 miles. Driving it home from the dealer, the check engine light came on. I'm getting p0420 and p0430 when scanned. Is it possible both catalytic converters failed at the same time? Anyone experience anything like this?

Make a U-turn and drive back to dealer. If it's not a phantom code, they should have fixed it and not passed it on.

What are the hours on this truck, and idle hours?

Unfortunately, catalytic converters are one of the very few problems we see kinda regularly. Ford recommends the plugs(16 of them) be changed at 100k. I've been recommending it earlier than that, especially if you have high idle hours. I will be changing mine at 75k. Bad plugs and misfires lead to a rich burn that clog cats.

I also agree, let the dealer deal with this one. That is emissions, and a serious deal for them to be covering up. I know my state has a law that covers the buyer for 3 days.

Thanks for the replies. The dealer will be taking care of the issue and replacing cats if needed. The o2 sensors were replaced with hopes of fixing the issue but the codes continue to come back. Was just curious if this was a common occurrence with these trucks. I will certainly replace plugs if trhe have not already been done. The truck has 6629 engine hours and 4475 idle hours.

That's a lot of idle hours, I'm wondering if a good load and a long hard run down the road would clean out the cats, they need to get good and hot every so often to clean out.

my 2014 6.2 trucks had 93,000 miles on it when i got it in january. same codes.
first thing i do was put the scanner on it, and only had one of the 16 spark plugs hitting 100% efficency. 2 were 80%, 4 were 50%, 3 were 40%, 4 were 20% and 2 were 0%.
the poor condition of the plugs filled the cats with unburned fuel and burned the cats out.
16 new plugs, two new cats, and 4 new O2 sensors were needed to fix the issue.

Thanks for the advice. I did try taking it on a long run and putting my foot into it. I even towed my dumped trailer loaded with dirt, cleared the codes, but they came right back. The o2 sensors were replaced before I purchased the truck. The dealer will be putting on 2 brand new OEM cats. I will defiantly get the plugs replaced as soon as I get it back.

Had a similar issue when I first purchased a 6.4L diesel, only the DPF was plugged. Ended up deleting it to avoid anything further. I switched to gas in hopes to avoid these emissions control issues, and of course I got a truck with plugged cats! O well, at least the codes appeared now and I'm not getting stuck with a 2k bill for new cats and o2 sensors.

I agree with previous advice. Look at engine idle hours and consider changing plugs sooner than the 100k recommendation. My truck was a fleet/lease truck and must have been sitting on job sites just running as I had crazy high idle hours. Hopefully this helps others avoid the expensive price of new catalytic converters.

With the high idle time it's no surprise it will need cats. Just a side effect of idling. You should be good to go when the dealer switches them out. Keep us posted.
