The moose machine has turbo woes
Alright fellas. My 38r decided it's had enough on Sunday. I was heading up a steady incline running about 1100 degrees for quite a ways and I got a real cool sound and a huge drop in power. Dropped a couple gears and went to the closest pullout as there was no safe place to stop. I pulled in the chain up area checked things out but couldn't see anything obvious. There was no where to turn around so I went up the 9 percent grade in second getting passed by semi's lol. I don't get passed very often! I just started pulling things apart to check what happened and found my compressor wheel has made a lot of contact and is now seized in there. Which would explain the eal slow drive home. I thing my old idi had more power at that point. So at this point my options are to replace the 38r or go t4 and a 369. What do you guys think. The 38r really didn't last me to long In my opinion however it is easy to replace and on the shelf 2 towns over. The 369 need to be ordered and a t4 mount made. But I feel the 369 would bring more power and more manageable temps. I guess my question is what's all involved in building a t4 mount and do you think a set of 160/80 injectors would power it? Thanks fellas

That sucks Nick! I wish I had some real world data to give you. I was told by James Barder, when I bought my 69 that it would be laggy with 180/80's and a 5spd. Said it wouldn't light until 3rd. Like I said, I have nothing concrete to back it up. However, Nik has run a 369 with 238's and I think with 160's and swears by it. May want to shoot him a PM.

Sounds like you have a project on your hands. I have considered making a t4 mount. I had saved a file somewhere from Oldwoodsdiesel that could be printed and used as a template on some angle iron to build the mount. Lots of young guys running 366 or 369 from irate in the lower mainland but it is a lot of coin whit the exchange rate and all.

Just to add some fuel to the fire, Andrew Arthur sells a T4 kit that uses the stock Oil supply and return ports (none of the hoses several guys have had trouble with) and he can set you up with either a 366 or the 364.5 kit for about $2k. Still a lot of coin, but I sure like the idea of not having those pesky oil lines in the valley to leak or burst. I've not seen the kit myself, but He says it's more or less a bolt-in solution. I'd think the 364.5 would be a little small for 160/80s but I bet a 366 would be a nice runner, especially if you're used to a 38r.

Nick I have an S366, but with my 160/80s, I think I would better off with a 369. Either that or keep the 366 and drop down to 160/0s.

What really sucks is all that you have already done is gone to be redone. I can't see another 38r doing any any different sadly.
Yet more flies in the ointment is the 366sxe moves much more air than the older sx366 did. What's the right plan? 369!!!! Then upsize injectors after if needed...life is too short to be a sheep...
