So when I picked up the truck I noticed the receiver is way bigger than the standard drawbar, so I asked about a reducer. The salesman didn't seem to believe there was supposed to be one, but he said he'd take care of it. So today I installed the insert, along with my drawbar. The thing is, there is so much space around the reducer that the drawbar is able to move all over the place. This surely can't be right. Anybody know what's going on here?

 

You have a 3 inch hitch and a 2 to 2.5 inch reducer, you need another reducer going from the 2.5 to 3. I believe curt just came out with one or demand your dealer find you one, if you have a dually or something with a 3 inch hitch

 

Your missing one reducer, there should be two. A 2.5" that fits in the 3", and a 2" that fits inside the 2.5". They both come with the truck and you should get a hitch pin.

My platinum arrived with only the hitch pin. Just yesterday I was back at the dealer trying to get both reducers... they ended up going out to one of their duallies and taking both reducers out & handing to me.

 

That may go on forever! lol!

 

If it were me I'd scrap the reducers all together and get a 3 inch hitch adapter.

 

As far as I know, there are no 3 inch weight distribution hitches on the market yet. And even if there were, that's a pretty pricey item to replace.

 

I should have thought to try it out while I was there, especially since the salesman didn't really have any idea what I was talking about. I just didn't realize there was supposed to be two inserts. I saw some reference to a 2.5" reducer, but it didn't click. Woulda, shoulda, coulda...
I have to drive the truck to work on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (parking garage is going to be fun!), so I'll stop by on my way home and make them make it right.
BTW, there's also supposed to be a reducer for the pin in a bag in the glove box. It's part # HC3C-19J243-AA. At least THAT part wasn't missing.

 

I only got the 2.5 insert but that is all I will ever need. It and the hitch pin came with the truck.

What are you towing - Ford literature says weight distribution on the new hitches is not required - I would take a test run before buying any new parts !

 

Just scanned the manual, and cannot find anywhere that says that. Even my rather light weight travel trailer causes the read to drop a few inches. The weight distribution hitch help move weight to the trailer and to the front axle, I doubt the Ford engineers have found a way to do this without weight distribution. Just because the truck can pull the trailer dead weight, does not mean the ride is not better with the distribution hitch.

 

I read the towing section of the owner's manual today, and don't recall seeing that in there. Have you got a reference?


Could be towing anything from a T@B to a three story fiver or a low boy. No test runs, pick up the haul and go.

 

It's in the towing guide. The new Superduty's are rated to tow max weight without the use of WDH. Doesn't mean you won't benefit from one though. I tow around 9k without one and it does it pretty good, minus the occasional lunge over uneven surfaces.
