What Transmission Fluid to use

I have a 1979 f350 with a 460 motor. Not sure what transmission would have been used but wondering what type of fluid I should use in the transmission.

Automatic correct? It would be a C6. Use ATF transmission fluid.

Later, Shortbox4x4

Pull the dipstick and see what is printed on it. It may say Mercon or type F. There was a messy production break right around '79.

Most likely "Dex-Merc" ATF which is readily available.

Check the dipstick; M2C138CJ=DEX/MERC; M2C33F= F TYPE. Ford changed around 1976 (C-6 trans). Yours should be DEX/MERC.

TYPE F: 1966/75 C4/C6.

MERCON (aka Dexron II): 1976 and later C4/C6.

My '78 F150 (with a 400 that must have been a replacement since it has a '76 emissions tag) says Type F, my '79 F350 Mecron. Hence why I said messy.

OK so I'm confused. My '77 owners manual says type F but the distick says ESP-M2C138-CJ OIL and from what I can find on line that is suppose to be DexronIII?

When we drained the tranny fluid and put a new filter in we put in type F. Should I change it to DexronIII?

Thanks, Shortbox4x4

I don't know what year your engine & trans are but my 1979 owners manual says:

C6 Automatic Transmission- Use fluid that meets Ford specification ESP-M2C138-CJ or Dexron II series D fluid, or equivalent.

My truck is a '77 F150 4x4.

So from what I gather than it's Dexron II.

I'll drain and flush it and refill etc....

Thanks!

Read this before you go through the trouble...

I wouldn't be too concerned.
