any power steering experts?

Hello all-
I have a 71 f100 4x4 with a 460 swap (not done by me) and what I was told when I purchased the truck that it has '76 power steering components. To clarify further incase that's wrong the pump plumbs directly into the steering gearbox (not a assist type unit)

Question I have after all of that
- when I try to turn the truck at slow speeds (such as into or out of a parking spot) the power steering pulley will actually stop and then cause the belt to squeal as the crank continues to spin it. The pump also constantly makes a whine type noise. Before I assume that the pump is bad, is it possible that it could be the gearbox? Any help is greatly appreciated. Hate to simply throw parts at it. Regards- Andy

Usually the pump will go directly to the gearbox. As for the belt stopping, with the motor off, remove the belt and spin the pulley to see if the bearing is spinning free. The constant whine noise is usually an indication that the fluid level is low.

In addition to low fluid, there could be a mismatch btwn the steering gear and the pump.... The Ford/Thompson pumps sometimes don't have enough pressure and the steering is slow/sluggish to react until the RPMs come up. I plan to run a Saginaw (canned ham) pump to replace my Thompson unit.

P/S not available with 4WD until 1973.

1973/75 F100 4WD & 1975 F150 4WD came with Garrison Power Assist P/S

1976 F100/150 4WD was the first year that Ford integral P/S was available.

Ford/Thompson P/S pump same 1967/77, has a steel reservoir. P/S pressure hose threads onto the pump.

I'd say you have the wrong belt on it. 10A1330 is too narrow I believe. See how it sits way down in the pump groove. I believe the Ford power steering belts are supposed to be a 13A type belt. This would explain the pulley slipping and as far as the whining that is a common Ford problem. I switched mine to a Saginaw pump and haven't looked back.

I'm getting more and more interested in this swap, especially now that the pump is unassed from the engine anyway (winter rebuild). I hate to be a drain on society, but my phone doesn't let me search the forums... any chance you could link to a good article or thread? The pump on my 76 still works (round rez), but the lines are bad and, of course, it's whiney.

We're talking pump, reservoir, brackets and hoses, right... pretty much everything upstream of the box? Were you able to pull everything off a donor? GM or Chrysler? (yep, Mopar used Saginaw steering too. Take THAT, purists! ).

Oh... and nice catch on the belt. Definitely too small. Surface area is your friend.

The pictured P/S pump is not the Ford/Thompson "pencil neck" type used 1967/77.

It's either a 1965/66 Ford pump with a steel reservoir, or a 1978/79 Ford C-II pump with a plastic reservoir.

The P/S pressure hose threads on 1965/77. 1978/79 with C-II pump, P/S pressure hose connects to the pump w/a qwik connect fitting.

I did the Saginaw pump conversion on my ‘77 F150 4x4 a year or two ago. The stock Ford pump just doesn’t put out the pressure at idle to turn the tires with out the pump squealing/working hard etc..

If you search my name/threads you should be able to find it as I posted pictures. That was when the 351m was still in it. Early this year I put in a 460 out of a ‘77 F350.

Later, Shortbox4x4

This is what I used. Not sure if it will work with your big block or not but I'm sure somebody makes a kit for a 460. Hope the link works. I messed around with Ford C2 pumps for a long time bleeding them out and replacing them. When I put the Saginaw pump on I started the truck and it had perfect quiet power steering instantly and has been working great ever since.

ok-Thank you for your input! I just went to see if it was quick connect or threaded and it it plastic reservoir with screw in pressure hose. HOWEVER- while looking i found a part number:
E 8 DC-3A578-BA -I only spaced the first 4 letters because it kept posting as EC
Does that mean 1988?
