Turbo suggestions

So I think my 02 7.3 Excursions turbo is on its last legs. I can only build about 22 LBS of boost and am getting bad turbo surge especially during shifting. I am planning on replacing the uppipes with Dorman ones as well but looking for turbo suggestions. I am looking at the SPX turbo wheel from SP turboboost the complete center section balanced and ready to go. Any other suggestions or does someone have first hand experience with this setup?

What other mods do you have? Surge is usually comes with a chip/tuner. A ported housing is the way to deal with that. Going over 25 psi is hard on the stock turbo.

Are you looking to just rebuild and beef up the stock turbo? Looking for a bolt in replacement that offers upgrades? Or looking to switch to a T4 mount? The options are many.

I've never heard of SP turbo, but a quick google revealed their website. Their site claims the taller wheel gives 4-7 lbs more boost, but dyno results are still pending. They also don't say much about how they upgraded the center section other than using a 360° washer instead of 270°

It doesn't say how high a boost pressure their turbo is good for, or even mention that the elevated boost levels might require a ported housing to reduce turbo surge. It also says their warranty only covers defects in materials and workmanship, so if going over 25 lbs of boost blows the turbo seal, that's not covered under their 6 month warranty.

No serious mods. Not trying to get crazy with the vehicle just want to beef it up a little and get rid of the surge and hopefully lower EGTs and possibly help with MPG as I don't think it is running efficiently. The tuner I have does make the surge worse but it is still there if I am heavy on the throttle when it shifts.

What tuner are you using? Typically surge is an intake housing thing. EGT's are dealt with either through tuning, larger down pipe, or changing the exhaust side of the turbo, or some combination of the above.

Have used both DP and currently running Hydra with gearhead tunes. Switched from DP to gearhead because everyone on here said the gearhead tunes used less FIPW to help with ICP but gearhead is still running high FIPW so I know that isn't helping my EGTs.

I have that 5/5 wheel. Got rid of my surge. No need to replace the center section if you are mechanically inclined. I used the 5/5 wheel and rebuild kit from spturboost. Later I swapped to a 1.0 exhaust housing to lower ebp and egt. I can link to my thread tomorrow on the computer.

Was just going to go with the whole center section so I dont have to deal with balancing the shaft.

Not buying the whole balancing center section thing. You gotta remove the wheel in order to reinstall the center section. How do you know v you got vwheel placement correct..ie(same amount of torque spec, started on right thread..etc, besides, the wheel itself is already balanced)....I Slapped a ww1 6yrs ago to remove the surge. Turbo, 150k later still banging.....

SPTurboost is a good place to do business with. I have not seen one bad comment about them here on the FTE. I bought a 360 bearing full turbo rebuild kit from them 2+ years ago and the support and install were flawless.

No need to balance the wheels/shaft for your application.

If I were in your situation, and I was 2+ years ago, find a wheel you are happy with and get a rebuild kit with a 360 bearing and do it yourself.

Below is the thread where I documented a lot of work I did to my truck, one task was the turbo rebuild and wheel upgrade. This is the first time I had ever done it and the task was not hard at all if you take your time and follow the advice of those here and the instructions either from SPT or RiffRaff.

Just a note on this. There are very few multi-start threads used anywhere, and the threaded shaft of the turbo is not one of them. It's a single start thread.

For a drop in, I would go for a 38R.
