UOA on oil, let's start with Valvoline

I've seen lot's of discussion on what oil to use, but haven't seen any posts showing UOA's on oil that folks have used. Why not start one here?

I'll start off with Valvoline Heavy Duty 15w-40 (I used the semi-synthetic version that's listed as high mileage). As this is my first truck with an EGR system, I paid extra for the soot analysis and TBN just to get a base line.

Nice! 6000 miles and good for another 2000. I need to do this as well especially since I tow and use Vavoline PBX.

This might not be very helpful to most, just for the heck of it here is my factory oil @ 5000 miles. Will post up my 5w40 PBX when I change it.

This was the factory fill. If memory serves me I did approximately 1,200 miles towing a 10,000 lb travel trailer in hilly terrain. It looks like the engine could care less that it was towing.

Ok, so I thought I would do my first UOA to see what you all think. It was done by ALS Tribology. I had only 3000 miles on the oil....51000 miles on the truck,no towing or hauling on this oil change, mixed driving....city/highway. I have been using Cen-Pe-Co 15-40 since I bought it a year ago....2014 F350.

My shop guy give me a quick overview, he seemed happy but not surprised with the results as he uses the same oil in his completion drag trucks.

Here's mine - Schaeffer Supreme 9000 Full Synthetic 5W-40. I have the last of this oil in the truck. This oil is no longer made - Schaeffer came out with a new 5W-40 formula which meets the CK-4 specification but does not appear on the Ford approved list. I also put the last of this oil in the truck when I put the Extreme Diesel by-pass filter on. I am going to change the oil when the truck tells me to and send it off to Blackstone. I'm curious as hell what the next analysis shows

Nice report. Quick question. Did you do any towing during these 7,119 miles on this oil?

If so...can you share what you tow, how heavy and under what conditions (hilly, hot, etc).

Thank you.

I guess someone needs to check with the Schaeffer guys. Are they planning on getting their new oil tested for approval with Ford? They've always had top notch stuff. I'd be surprised if their new oil wouldn't work, but it sure would be nice to get confirmation.

It's probably going to be a while for a smaller oil producer like Schaeffer.

I towed a 22' enclosed trailer with a 2003 or 2002 Thunderbird in it 8 weekends during the 7,119 miles. I want to say probably between 2 & 300 miles one way (so total 4 / 600 miles 8 times), one of the trips was over 300 miles - closer to 5 one way (so 1,000 total for that trip)

I called Schaeffer and asked them if they were planning on producing a 5w40 that meets Ford's specification. The woman I spoke with told me that they have a couple 10w30 oils that meet Ford's specification and that she was told their 5w40 would be out in the fall but in her opinion it will probably be more like the spring when it's released. I'm kinda bummed, when I bought my truck I did a bunch of R&D into which oil to use. I'm not a big fan of in your face advertising which immediately ruled out one brand. That particular brand as well as most of the others primary thrust in life is the gasser world. Schaeffer's focus seems to be oil for diesel's and have been doing it for a while. They had a premium fully synthetic oil so went with them.

The other consideration is the possibility that Schaeffer says their oil meets the Ford spec but Ford has not tested it yet.

I took the leap of faith and am going with a close competitor to Schaeffer and am using AMSOIL which says their oil fully meets the Ford spec but Ford has not yet approved it.

Through oil analysis I will quickly find out if this oil is any good or not and will report back here. I am awaiting a virgin oil analysis of the AMSOIL and my test sample from my last oil change. Should have the results any day now.

Just got back the virgin oil analysis on the AMSOIL Max Duty Synthetic 5w40.

The new Ford spec main difference has to do with Phosphorus. Oils with less than 1,000 PPM they were seeing accelerated valve train wear. Likely if your CK-4 oil had more than 1,000 PPM then you got approved to the new standard...WSSM2C171-F1.

Looks like this AMSOIL comes in with a score of 1,233. Much higher than what is required by the new F1 standard.

So while this oil is not on Fords approved list it seems to check all the correct boxes.

I may eat my words...but when I get the oil analysis of this exact oil I will post that...Fingers crossed this oil performs.

Someone should send it a virgin sample of T6 to Blackstone to see what those results are. Or Schaeffer for that matter. Could be interesting!

I'm not going to argue with you because I don't know why Ford got so picky about oils, but if 1,000 ppm is the magic number, it seems most of our UOA's come back below that mark. I wonder how much below it you can get before things start going bad?

I'll be interested to see the drop phosphorous in your UOA.

I agree. My first analysis was the factory fill and it was just barely above 1,000. Kinda impressed with how high the AMSOIL is. Will be interesting to see if it drops after racking up a few miles. Nice to have the baseline.
