The Great 6.2L Gearing Debate Thread
Hello FTE!
As it was mentioned in the 6.2 why so quiet thread, it once again due to the wonderful reliability of the 6.2, the conversation turned to gears. How bout we kick the gearing stuff to it's own thread within the 6.2 section? After all there are also a couple of gearing threads within here and the SD section.
Keep it clean.

But seriously I wish I had 4.30s. People that weren't around when automatic transmissions only had three gears don't know what it was like.....so having six I would never sweat having lower rear end gears. Our formerly owned 14 Ram had 3.42s and i didn't like them like I did my 2008 Ram which had 3.73s. I think 3.73 is really about perfect in a diesel.

what about 6.10.. so we could climb a tree ok, a really big tree.
but to the point....
I would like an Eaton 2 speed rear end. (air shifting)...
like in the "White" truck I used to drive.
it had a 5 speed manual transmission. and the air shifter **** was on the shift lever.
loaded and going up hills..
one low, one high, two low, two high, three low, three high.. etc.
empty... set to High and start off in second...

Well I got my quote from Randy's last night. I'm right at about $1300-1400 depending on the rebuild package and options in the quote. There is no price difference between the 4.30s and the 4.56s The rep I spoke with at Randy's asked the purpose behind the regear and suggested the 4.56s over the 4.30s but either case they will be a solid choice. I'm kind of siding with the 4.30s for slightly better fuel economy. Most of my camping is in PA and 80 is pretty hilly though so 4.56s might be better especially if we get a new trailer.
I got a few choices in the coming months. The plan is to re gear in the winter in time for the next camping season. My neighbor who is a factory mechanic for Toyota said he would have no problem giving me a hand getting them installed once he gets the lift in.
