New '65 F100 - Weatherizing
Hey guys, I just bought this '65 model:
It was an army base truck, so that's why it's green. The original brown shows through in places and on the dash.
The only parts on it that are not original are: radiator, alternator, thermostat, sideview mirrors and maybe the wheels (i have the hub caps in a box but they don't fit).
The previous owner took great care of it in his garage. I don't have a garage, so I want to be sure that it's weather tight since it will be sitting outside. It's my daily driver.
Lots of the door/window rubbers are dried out and cracking with age and showing gaps.
Any advice on what all to replace for a weather-tight seal?

I like it!!! What a find, personally I like the Green.
Recent thread have not been too favorable regarding the quality of Dennis Carpenter products; that being said, IMO they offer quality when it comes to weatherstrip, windshield and rear window gaskets, seals, and many other products.
The 2 65 F100's I own have been setting out in the elements for the past 45 plus years. I set up 3/4" and/or 1" tube frame and secured a tarp over the top to shield them from the elements; seems condensation is minimal and considering it is as best as can be expected?
Purchased the 65 Flareside at County auction, originally owned by utility company, their vehicles were painting brown, sometime not sure I should not have selected another color but decided it is what it is. Appears U have the option of either sticking with the Green, which I like, or select a flavor correct for the year?

You need to make sure all the drains are clear.
The cowl drains down through kick panels.
The front cab mounts have drains that can easily be plugged with mud.
The doors have drains along the bottom
If floor becomes wet....be sure to remove the rubber floor mat so it can dry properly. Most of the time these trucks rust from the inside out.

If the truck was purchased by the US Gov't, the DSO code stamped on the Warranty Plate will be 83
IF the truck was painted a non standard color, there's no COLOR code stamped on the Warranty Plate, there will be 4 additional numbers after the DSO code.
Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch.
Windshield, back glass and all the door related weather strips have been reproduced in the USA by Dennis Carpenter, located in Concord NC

Here's what's on the Warranty Plate:
W.B. - 115
Color - <blank>
Model - F100
Body - 481
Trans - A
Axle - 09
Max G.V.W. - 5000
Cert. Net. H.P. - 129
R.P.M. - 4000
D.S.O - 830161
It appears to have the military olive green underneath the lighter green color. My research has only turned up a couple of trucks online that seem to have been this lighter color. Do you know if this color was something the army did to certain trucks after receiving them?

Yes, the DSO starts with 83 and the color code is blank on the warranty plate. It also has a U.S. Property plate screwed to the firewall in the engine bay. It has a "Registration Number" and "Federal Stock Number" listed on it as well as a "Date of Delivery" which is "June 1965". Also lists a "Contract Number."
Here's what's on the Warranty Plate (edited):
Model - F100 = F100 2WD, 5,000 lbs. GVWR
Body - 481: 4 = Light Beige Crush Vinyl & Light Beige Wicker Pattern Vinyl / 81 = 81A Standard Cab.
Trans - A = Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh transmission (A = 1961/65; C = 1966/79).
Axle - 09 = Ford 9" rear axle / 3.70-1 / 3,300 lbs. rear axle capacity.
5000 = 5000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

I would assume that the non standard color would match the branch of the service that the truck was intended to be used by.
AFAIK, dark blue for the USAF, olive drab for the USA and sea gray for the USN (and possibly the USMC).

It would have been painted this colour at the factory by Ford, as these were standard colours and all paint suppliers had the mix formulas.
The Correct FS 24087 paint can still be bought from several of the military vehicle parts suppliers.
In my opinion this would be a good candidate to restore back to as delivered and would have higher value than the typical truck of the same year and options due to the crossover factor with military vehicle collectors.
The Vehicle number and or unit numbers may still be on the vehicle on the door or hood if you decide to repaint some careful sanding in these areas may reveal them.
