The Case of The Mystery Transmission
Hello! I am SO excited to be here!
I am the proud owner of a 1966 F-100. In the past year of ownership I've learned that nothing much more than the paint is original. (The engine is a '72 240 L6, for one.) But a previous owner also swapped out the original manual transmission for an automatic. The tricky part is, I was left without a dipstick, and have no clue what size would properly fit! Right now, the transmission is leaking and I'm not sure how much fluid to put in, but would like to figure out what exactly I have before moving forward with fluids, gaskets, filters, O-Ring, etc.
What I DO know:
-The pan has 14 bolts
-11" by 8.5"
-I am finding nothing like "C4" or "FX" on the pan
-Attached is a metal tag that reads (photo)PHA A289 6J15B

but I was told this tag is for an engine and has nothing to do with the transmission/was put there by mistake?
-A local transmission shop owner kindly looked at it and told me it was a "Cast Iton Small Case 4."
Again, anything helps! This transmission deserparately needs work and I can't begin without a proper identification!

Personally I cant think of a worse transmission behind a 240 except for the early 60s 2 speeds or the oddball C5 and C3. Now the FX..FMX Cruiso family was tough and OK behind high HP engines. AlsoI do believe that FX FMX MX Cruisomatic family is the basis of the AOD.
These transmissions were designed for heavy sedans with higher HP engines so they rob some power from a low HP engine like the 240.
The C4 would be a much better transmission for you. The C4 is efficient (one of the most efficient of all automatics) parts are readily available and it can be built really strong.
It's something to consider since this one leaks and the prior installation may be less than ideal.
Another option is a later AOD if you want overdrive.
Now you may can repair it and not have to deal with a swap and all the trouble that is, but before I sunk too much money into it I would consider other options.

The FX and specifically built for lower HP applications. The MX was used for higher HP applications.
The FMX uses the MX internals inside the dimensionally smaller FX Case. The FX has lower parasitic losses than the FMX or the MX of the FX MX FMX family it is best the of the bunch in this application.
The C5 was just a C4 with a lock up torque converter and the C3 is light duty small car (IE pinto) transmission. Neither of which I would call oddball.
All the FX MX FMX transmissions are good stout tranny's Just be sure to use type F Transmission fluid in them and NOT Dexon/Mercon using Dexron or Mercon in a Transmission that is spec'd for Type F fluid is sure fire way to crater the transmission.

I'm learning so much! Thanks you guys! I've ordered a new dipstick and housing tube- but is there a known distance from the end of the dipstick to the "full" line so I can make do with a dipstick I already have? Or an amount of fluid that the tranny needs after I flush it? Up until two weeks ago his tuck was my daily driver, so I'd like it back on the road while I wait for the parts to arrive!
