Factory Upgraded Bumper?

I have a 1966 F-100 that I recently bought from a guy whose family has owned since they purchased it from the dealer. The guy told me that the rear bumper that it has was actually an upgraded heavy duty bumper that they requested to install. I have done some research and I can't seem to find any information about any upgraded rear bumpers that people could have requested. I am planning on replacing the bumper regardless, but I am trying to figure out if it is something that someone would want.

Not installed on the assembly line - but it was very common for a dealer where you bought a truck to gladly send the truck out to get a step bumper installed. So that is an era correct aftermarket step bumper. I've got a couple here that I have removed from trucks. Yours doesn't look too bad - some are fugly.

Fey and Barden were two common names here on the west coast back in the day.

Here's a Barden bumper for a Chevy of the same era.

It doesn't look too bad, but I am definitely planning on changing it to the original style bumper that it came with. This bumper was bolted on to the side of the truck, so now I have to cover up the holes that this bumper made in order to get installed.

If you look at the invoice for one of my 1966 trucks here you can see the extra cost items in the right hand column. Mirrors, HD rear bumper, left and right stowage compartments and undercoating. This truck would have come with no rear bumper at all from the factory since it is a 4WD.

Aftermarket, not genuine Ford.

Rear bumpers were optional or dealer installed accessories thru at least 1979. Ford didn't offer a step bumper for Stylesides until 1968.

The only optional Styleside rear bumpers for 1964/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD were the painted (C4TZ-17906-A) and chrome (C4TZ-17906-B) contour rear bumpers.

These two rear bumpers also used on 1967/72 F100/250 2WD/4WD & F350; 1973/77 F250 4WD (High Boys) & 1973/79 F350's on the 140" wheelbase.

The mounting brackets for the 1964/72 contour bumper and the chrome contour bumper are reproduced. 1973/79 contour brackets are different!
