1973 F-350 Ranger XLT Dually Trailer Special

So today I found this truck about 5 minutes from my place. It has been sitting for a long time (last sticker on the license plate is from 1991!).

It appears to be a 1973 (or 74/75?). F-350 Ranger XLT Dually Trailer Special with a 390 (if the engine is still original). Ford Deluxe Topper.

Are those fender flares factory?

I might have to have a chat with the owner ...

Nice find...looks like the Camper Special with the 140" wheelbase.

That's an aftermarket or "home-made" dually, as the front wheels/hubs are not the dually style.

F350 Trailer Specials also had the 140" wheelbase according to several posts by Number Dummy that I have read. Someone probably didn't want to buy the massive single rear tire and put the duals on instead. Add some factory spacers to the front end and finish the conversion. Dump the lock ring wheels in a scrap bin.

I'm curious how the shell is tied down since the interior of the bed will be smooth. Must have something down in the stake pockets.

No...and neither are the dual rear wheels!

Truck has Race Track mouldings that were introduced in 1977. 390's last installed in F100/350's in 1976.

Trailer Special fender emblems (below F350) are either D3TZ-16720-Y (1973) or D4TZ-16720-F (1974/76).

1977/79 Trailer Specials use a different emblem (D6UZ-1142528-A). It's located at the center lower of the tailgate.

390 emblems (C8OZ-16228-D) are from a 1968/69 Fairlane/Torino.

F350 Regular Cabs on the 140" wheelbase: 1973/76 Super Camper Special; 1973/79 Trailer Special; 1977/79 Camper Special. Ford dropped "Super" after 1976.

The dual rear wheels were not factory installed, neither were the fender flares.

No F350's with dual rear wheels were available with a pickup bed until 1980!

ALL 1953/79 F350's with dual rear wheels were sold new as a Cab & Chassis (no "back of cab" equipment) or with factory installed flat & stake beds.

Thanks, Bill. So this is quite the Frankentruck! I'm still curious.

That bed would only fit on the 140" wheelbase I am guessing? Someone might be interested in it. And the camper shell.

Yes.
1973/79 F350's on the 140" wheelbase (2WD & SRW only!) use unique Styleside beds, because their Dana 70 rear axle is set back further.

1973/76's have exposed fuel caps, 1977/79's have fuel doors.

lol no those are not factory duelly fenders - those would be very round and about the width of a wheel and tire

this truck has a cab&chassis axle in it , not a duelly pickup truck axle

the c&c axle is narrower than the duelly pickup axle by almost two tire widths - thus the small flares on this truck

grill is 73-4 (in canada it would originally have push button door handles)
73-5 had the tank in the cab (in canada the 5 finally got the lift up handles)

X long wheelbase , side mount spare f350 with the early front end .. NICE FIND !!
the C&C axle mod is pretty cool to but I would want to make the front hubs & wheels match though

quote
No F350's with dual rear wheels were available with a pickup bed until 1980!

I'm sorry but this is incorrect - they were rare as hell when new - I haven't seen one since the 70's
the rear fenders looked something like a trailer fender from the 30's might look , stuck on the side of the box

they were so ugly I can see why there's none left now
(it looked like a 70's dodge duelly fender .. but much more ugly - and would probably make the lower racetrack trim impossiable to install)

there was also an aftermarket duelly conversion for 5 bolt half tons - that came with a wide but very rectangular fender

No such thing as factory DRW fenders until 1980.

this truck has a cab & chassis axle in it , not a dually pickup truck axle.
No F350 DRW pickups were available until 1980.

grill is 73-4.
No F350's with DRW's were available with a pickup bed until 1980.

Grille frame is 1973/77 (D6TZ-8200-A replaced D3TZ-8200-A). Right (D3TZ-8150-A) & left (D3TZ-8151-A) grille plastic inserts are 1973/75.

lol
I remember when the 80's came out
I remember the thought was well at least the duelly's look better

maybe you didn't have dw pickups in the US but we certainly did

grille inserts are 3- 4 with the round headlight bezzels.. the 5's , 6's and 7's got the black pan racoon eyes

here as I said the 3&4 got push button door handles
I've only ever seen them on original 3&4's and never seen one in an add or movie that was featureing an american truck

I always figured we got trucks with left over stock of the 67-72 door handles .. until they ran out

there was a green 3 or 4 plow truck in my collage parking lot with the push button door handles ,, and west coast mirrors - all original
(and soo nice)

Canada makes no difference, there were no DRW pickups until 1980!

Out for a drive in the 914?

Those look like aftermarket bushwacker flares.

I dig that truck....f350 dually can tow some stuff.

They 140" beds have stake pockets on each corner, with a hole a couple inches down. I've got my topper secured with 4 J-Bolts.

I've never seen one because Ford never made one. If you saw one, it was a conversion like this F350 is.

the rear fenders looked something like a trailer fender from the 30's might look , stuck on the side of the box.
If you look in the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, the ONLY rear fenders you will find are: B7C-16312-A Right & B7C-16313-A Left.

Applications: 1973/79 FLARESIDES.

I was a Ford parts guy for 35 years (1962/97) and I've seen more of these trucks than most members of this forum combined.

(sigh) You can lead a mule to water, but you cannot make it drink.
