Ford technicians pick the 5.0

Interesting but I'm not sure I buy their argument that why they would buy a 5.0 over the Ecoboost.

This is real simple, the last thing a mechanic wants to do when he gets off work is work on his own vehicle. The 5.0 makes good power and is less complicated than the Ecoboost so it has less issues, that makes it the choice for this demographic. My father got the same answers from mechanics before his purchase last year, they were all plenty familiar with the ecoboost but a 5.0 was a rare site in the shop.

Most of them boiled it down to keep it simple and less crap to break.

To be honest, I'd opt for the less powerful 4.6L over any of them. Then I know for sure that I'll have a 300,000 mile engine.

The EB is still fairly young and has suffered some issues and the 5.0L has been around for a bit in the Mustang and F-150 and has suffered major issues in both.

What's really sad here is that by the time Ford gets all this sorted out, they'll switch engines again and the teething issues will start all over again.

You're probably right. If you don't need an abundance of power for towing large loads, the 4.6 is a great engine. Think of the fuel savings over the life of the truck. I love my 6.2/3.73 but it has a bit of a drinkin' problem.

The very reasons I purchased my 2013 5.0 F150. I chose not to buy an extended warranty because I believe it is less problematic. When the warranty expires, I'll have free rein to do upgrade whatever does break and do the work myself.
On side note: My wife has a 2.0 Ecoboost Escape. We purchased an extended warranty on it because I'd rather not work on it. I has been flawless and only receives routine maintenance.

I'm a technician and picked the Ecoboost for my F-150 and the Flex. I like the turbo technology, low end grunt, and how quiet it is. I think the 5.0 and 6.2 are solid engines as well.

I agree. I don't think Ford makes a bad truck engine when choosing from the Ecoboost, 5.0, or 6.2. You just have to pick the one that fits your application.

You can count me in as another long time Ford dealership technician that votes for the 5.0L V8 HANDS DOWN. Nothing against the 3.5L EB, but I've replaced more than my share of timing chains on these trucks to tell you that just about any job on these engines is pretty labour intensive.

The 6.2L V8 is another very good solid engine, but unfortunately Ford has taken that option away from us, likely due to slow sales....

Because they have never seen one, instead they slip through the oil change line as there aren't any known issues with them

The 6.2 left due to fuel mileage, people say it's so bad but it's right on par if not better then the 5.4 of not so long ago, I'm very happy with its mpg.

I was happy with my '95 F250 4x4 with a 460. With the 4.10's, that thing was a pleasure to haul horses with. I had a Focus to throw commuter and grocery getter miles on though, so the fuel economy didn't mean a whole hill of beans to me. I prefer to have a truck to do truck stuff and a car to do car stuff.

It goes back to what we deal with in the data center and IT world; purpose built solutions always work extremely well when performing the job they were designed for while "do it all" hardware/software solutions are just okay to poor at a few things.
