3.5 Ecoboost gen 1 versus Gen 2

I'm looking for some input from those of you who have experience with both the Gen1 and Gen 2 3.5 EcoBoost engine.

Are the improvements Ford made to the Gen 2 engine a big deal?

Torque and power seem pretty close.

Is the mileage better or worse on the gen 2 engine?

Realiability wise is there any difference?

Yea, its a big deal.

The truck runs way better.
It makes a very pleasant growl when needed.
Feels way quicker.

I only have 2500 miles on the new one.
Lifetime mpg on my '13 was an even 19 mpg.
The new one is at 20.8 and still climbing.
I have been getting between 21.6 and 21.9 on mine so far.
From what I have seen, the city driving mileage is much better.
City mileage was terrible in my '13.

The 10 speed transmission makes a big difference also.
There are some rougher shifts when you are braking and it is downshifting usually from 4 to 3.
If you are lighter on the brake you don't notice it and/or it skips that shift.

Time will tell how it holds up.

If you are not sure you want to commit, do not drive one.
Once you have driven one it over.

Sort of an apples to oranges comparison but I had a '14 Explorer Sport with the Gen 1 and a 6 speed and now I have a '17 F150 Lariat with the Gen 2 and a 10 speed. It's as quick or quicker than the Explorer - particularly in Sport Mode. The Explorer got 13 in the city and was lucky to get 19 on the highway; my F150 gets 18 city and 21 highway. Yup, a pickup getting better mileage than an SUV! The Gen 2 engine is definitely better. In addition, even though the owners manual for both vehicles say you can use regular unless towing near the limit, the Gen 1 engine ran crappy on anything less than Mid-grade. The Gen 2 runs fine on regular.

Electronic waste gates, higher boost turbos, timing chain redesign, port injection, hollowed cams, 10.5:1 compression ratio over the 10:1. Few other things http://www.wardsauto.com/engines/ford-touts-second-gen-ecoboost-v-6-10-speed-trans-17-f-150

It's an entirely new engine built around the old bore and stroke.

My wife and I just got back from SA.
Around a 450 mile run. Left it was at 21.6, ran 77mph there and back. Filled up when we got back, 21 mpg for the tank.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at a 2018 F150 XLT Super Crew with a 6.5' bed with the 3.5 Ecoboost and 3.55 gears. When we last drove the 3.5 EB it was a couple years ago and man what a rocket ship.

As soon as the rebates are right I'm all in.
Thanks everyone

We just completed a 1084 mi. trip to AL last month, cruising at 67-68 we were getting 23-24 mpg going and coming. Very acceptable.

One thing to keep in mind is that the gen 1 ecoboost design flaws made their way into this newest version. Be very careful if you choose this... you will need an extensive warranty.

Get it through your thick skull that nothing between the 1st gen and 2nd gen are shared other than displacement. They addressed the cam phaser, timing chain, and intercooler issues with this new engine. It was a good year before the issues with the intercooler showed up on forums and led to a class action lawsuit, which has been a hit or miss issue anyway. It's not as wide spread as the International 6.0L was, which hit a much larger percentage of engines.

So quit spewing your hatred of the EcoBoost with misinformation that only affected a small handful of engines. Ford has a lot riding on the EcoBoost to let the old issues carry over in a ground up design. Remember, the old engine was built off the na 3.5L engine. This new one has a new block that was designed clean sheet.

He's a teenager troll. Stop feeding him.

He claimed to have inside knowledge that the Raptor would not be an ecoboost. He's just trolling

Can you explain why the 2017s have condensate buildup issues, cam phaser rattles and blown engines? Follow the 2017 Raptor and you will see the problems that group has faced so far!

I wish 93cobra would provide a link to all of these Raptor problems. There are many subforums on the Raptor forum, I've casually looked at several, but I do not have the time or energy to read them all. So give us a link or keep your trap shut !
