3.5 Ecoboost gen 1 versus Gen 2
I'm looking for some input from those of you who have experience with both the Gen1 and Gen 2 3.5 EcoBoost engine.
Are the improvements Ford made to the Gen 2 engine a big deal?
Torque and power seem pretty close.
Is the mileage better or worse on the gen 2 engine?
Realiability wise is there any difference?

Yea, its a big deal.
The truck runs way better.
It makes a very pleasant growl when needed.
Feels way quicker.
I only have 2500 miles on the new one.
Lifetime mpg on my '13 was an even 19 mpg.
The new one is at 20.8 and still climbing.
I have been getting between 21.6 and 21.9 on mine so far.
From what I have seen, the city driving mileage is much better.
City mileage was terrible in my '13.
The 10 speed transmission makes a big difference also.
There are some rougher shifts when you are braking and it is downshifting usually from 4 to 3.
If you are lighter on the brake you don't notice it and/or it skips that shift.
Time will tell how it holds up.
If you are not sure you want to commit, do not drive one.
Once you have driven one it over.

Sort of an apples to oranges comparison but I had a '14 Explorer Sport with the Gen 1 and a 6 speed and now I have a '17 F150 Lariat with the Gen 2 and a 10 speed. It's as quick or quicker than the Explorer - particularly in Sport Mode. The Explorer got 13 in the city and was lucky to get 19 on the highway; my F150 gets 18 city and 21 highway. Yup, a pickup getting better mileage than an SUV! The Gen 2 engine is definitely better. In addition, even though the owners manual for both vehicles say you can use regular unless towing near the limit, the Gen 1 engine ran crappy on anything less than Mid-grade. The Gen 2 runs fine on regular.

So quit spewing your hatred of the EcoBoost with misinformation that only affected a small handful of engines. Ford has a lot riding on the EcoBoost to let the old issues carry over in a ground up design. Remember, the old engine was built off the na 3.5L engine. This new one has a new block that was designed clean sheet.
