reverse lights not working

Auto or manual tranny?
The wiring is slightly different, for manual transmissions there is a reverse sensor on the transmission that closes the circuit for the reverse lights. On automatics, I believe it comes from the MLPS which reads where the shift lever is.
You may also want to check the grounds at the lights themselves.

Put it in reverse, and put the parking brake on for safety. Key on, but engine off. Crawl underneath with your multimeter. Find the wiring going to the reverse switch on the transmission. Unplug it, should be 12V to one of the two wires, if not you'll have to trace the wiring back to see if there is a break anywhere. Make sure the fuse is good before this.... If you get 12V on one of the wires, jumper between the two and see if the reverse lights go on.
While still under the truck, test the reverse switch, you should have continuity between the two contacts on the switch. If its an open circuit, the switch is broken, replace it.
