Has anyone done a 6.7L swap?

Has anyone done a 6.7L swap into an 05 Excursion yet? First post, had to make it ridiculous, despite my real interest! Really love the old 05 Bauer interior for the year, but would love it better with a 6.7

Welcome Thor, the closest I've seen is grafting a junker excursion rear body to a pick up front end with the 6.7l engine.

No offense, but I don't know anyone that would want a 6.7L transplanted into an older vehicle with no DEF and other emissions non-sense. Not to mention all the 6.7L owners I know that are having problems with those engines left and right. I DO know of several folks that have had 7.3L engines put into their trucks after the 6.4L/6.7L gave up the ghost.

Just trying to find a clean Ex is hard enough, so I was thinking a conversion might make it easier to find a clean roller to drop a conversion in. You make a good point though about emissions for sure. What would you call an Ex with a Cummins in it? Can't be a Fummins...maybe a CummEx, CummScursion? ExsCummins? I can't help it but I realized the need for a Diesel SUV with a long wheelbase, and can't help but get mad thinking these are about the only thing that fits the bill but they're so hard to find clean.

I started looking through 3/4 ton pickups with crew cabs or larger and short box, and after seeing how people think they're made of gold, I can't get myself to pull the trigger on one. Besides, a pickup isn't going to haul my family now that I've inherited a grand-daughter that we're raising as our own daughter. Then I heard the new Grand Wagoneer might come out as a diesel and was going to wait for that, but I doubt we'll see that anytime soon. Whatever I do now I need a large SUV and it needs to be able to tow reliably across country, but I don't want a gasser. The 5R110 transmissions in the Ex seems to have the best reputation with all my mechanic friends even the dyed in the wool Dodge guys. So I'm sold. I need an Ex and I'll find a clean southern rust free one or die trying!

If anyone knows the best way to find an Ex possibly 2005 Bauer feel free to share any sources. I think I'm going blind online looking for the right one. I like the front coils and also heard the HPOP is cast bodied in 2005+ and rarely fail if you're wondering why 2005.

Thanks all, I appreciate your input greatly!

You won't get any front coils on an 05 Excursion. 05+ truck? Yes. What is your budget for this "clean" 05 Excursion you are looking for?

We have a few members here that have done the Cummins conversion in their Excursions, and they do call them "Fummins".

Another member here is selling his 05 here: http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...searchRadius=0

I don't know, all that my V-10 gasser does is tow our 11,000lb TT all over the country (well the Eastern part of it and currently we are North of the border) and it has been as, if not more reliable than any diesel.
And like Mike already said, the 4X4 SD trucks did get coil front suspension in '05 but the mighty EX kept the same front leaf springs as the older rigs. Of course the RWD trucks and EXs have always had front coils.

Thanks for clarifying that! So coils aren't worth worrying over, leaving only really the HPOP advantage. All the 6.0's would need studs and deletes other than that. The reason I was avoiding the 7.3L was that I want that 5R110 behind the diesel for towing. I really appreciate the info nicmike. Budget right now is an initial 15k and maybe to 18k depending. Looking for something unmolested and reliable, perhaps with delete/studs if done with paperwork trail too but I'm sure that's a bit more. Towing our TT in the mountains is why I want diesel and the TT adds an overestimated loaded weight of max 7200lbs and 650 on the hitch (it's dry 5200/545 and we have a weight distro anti-sway already also). Great choice in hitches WE3ZS btw!

Thor,

Welcome to FTE and the Excursion forum.
Very few '05 excursions have the '05 6L psd.
The '05 Excursion used the '04 6L until the last couple of months of production. Then, those had to get special PCM software to work with the old-style dashboards, an even more unusual version of a limited model.

Get an ODB2 device to read live data (scangauge2, or odb2 adaptor and APP) before you go shopping for a 6L.
It will let you read oil and coolant temps on your long test drive at highway speeds to detect a plugged oil cooler, FICM voltages, and high-side oil pressure.

Check out the 6L forum sticky at the top on what to look for when buying, similar thread in the Excursion Forum as well.

I love my '05 6L Excursion.

Sounds like I need a flight and my OBDII reader. I didn't like the ones I saw here in the Nashville area at all...so far. ...but there's a few in Kentucky nearby

Still beating my V-10 drum here, even if you have ruled them out. If you happen to stumble upon a V-10 with the 4.30 gears give it a test drive, with proper gearing the 6.8 does really well with a heavy trailer without any of the diesel (potential) drama.. I have towed our 11k TT through and around TN/KY several times, we were just down in Nashville in March. It pulls the mountain around that area without any issues.
I wish I had the 5R110 trans too, but remember that the OD ratio is the same as the 4R100 and the step change between OD and Drive is the exact same on both transmissions.

Funny you say that, because I'm looking at those also. Just trying to make sure I find a very rust free southern version. Saw one like yours just yesterday and had I not been on a mission to take wife and grandkid into town, I would have spun around and chased him down...it was really clean and went by at the stop sign at the end of my road at about 30mph. So they're around here at least! Taking forever to find the right one but I really like the Eddie B interior and am partial to 2004/2005. Was it possible to get the 5R110 trans in a V10 Excursion? Educate me! ...and thanks!

Unfortunately no, the mighty EX never got the 5 speed auto behind the 6.8 just like how they didn't get the coil fronts in '05.

I'm just about ready to lose my mind looking for the right one! I am NOT a truck guy, but an SUV I can always enjoy. Patience I say (to myself) ...patience...

Patience, many of us here spent many months (or longer) looking for the "right" one. It was the better part of a year for me, but in the end it was well worth the wait.
