Being from the south, I fully understand "y'all." However, I never address only one person as, "y'all". ....unless it's a matter of a friend/family member visiting (by themselves) and I say something like, "Y'all come see us" meaning for them AND the rest of their family to come visit next time too.
The one northerners use that I don't get is, "You guys". ("Hey, you guys"), particularly when there are females present in the group as well (?). In the north, are guys guys and the females are too? "Y'all" covers everyone and isn't gender-specific.
