My 1974 F250 has the front and rear fuel tanks that appear factory. It has the "Main Aux" switch on the climate control panel, with 3 wires orange, green w/ orange tracer, green w/ red tracer.
It also has a manual fuel tank selector valve, under the floor pan, below the drivers outboard seat belt. The mounting holes and handle pass thru hole, in the cab, look factory stamped. The is NO wiring in the cab, or under it, for a electric tank selector switch.
Did Ford build these like this? It sure looks like it. I guess one had to select the tank and select the gauge? Seems odd.
Yes, that was factory. In 1973 and 74 the dual tanks had a manual selector valve to switch the fuel tanks and had the switch mounted in the HVAC panel to switch the gauge.
In '75 the system was changed so it was all electric and the switch on the HVAC panel did both functions, switching the gauge and tank.

Can you see on the back of the switch whether it's got two rows of terminals?
For the lowly utility Broncos, they got the manual selector valve all the way through the '77 model year. The dash switch only handled the gauge functions, just like yours is. The switch itself had two full rows of terminals so you could use the one row for gauge duties and the second row to control an electric valve.
It's possible of course that your switch is not like that, as the position of the Bronco's switch allowed for the large body, while the one in the heater controls might have been a slimmer version. However, it would be worth a look if you don't know already. Sounds from the description of the wire colors that you've already had the switch out and could confirm it's configuration.

Hi all, I was actually also going to post on this topic tonight as well really looking to parts dummy for help. I have an old style valve which appears to be part number D5TB-9F271-AA. I want to use this valve vice the newer style that is made of plastic and seems pretty cheap. I can't find one anywhere, any thoughts? I don't want to use this one if I can't get a replacement in case it ever breaks.

1975/79 F100/350 ~ No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
This valve was used on 1975/79 F100/350's. The switch (D5TZ-9A050-A - see post #9) used with this valve, changes the tanks and the dash fuel gauge from one tank to the other.
