New Bed Bolts…..Exterior Torx Plus

Just a heads up for those of you who will need to remove the bed bolts to either do a gooseneck hitch when they come out or to do a spray in bedliner and dont want the bolts sprayed over…………the bed bolts of the 17 Super Duties are different than anything they have had in the past. Ford had to do something crazy! I went to get my liner sprayed in and we spent a good while trying to find something that we could remove the bolts with. They are still a torx but are now the complete opposite of the regular torx and look like a star. I believe they are a size 26 exterior torx plus. Napa, snap-on, and other major hardware places didnt have anything. Some had in stock or could order up to a size 24 but that was as large as they went. I finally caught a matco tool truck that had a 19mm sure grip socket made to work on bolts that had really rounded-off heads. It was 6 sided and caught pretty well. We used this and the Linex dealer and I both bought one so we would both have something to use in the interim because I know when I go to get a gooseneck hitch in later when they become available most likely they wont have a tool to remove the bolts either.

How sure are you on that size? I'm going to need one to take my bed of when it gets in.

I've got a caliper, a smartphone, and an F-250! Based on a quick bit of research, I'd say it's a Torx E22, but here's some pictures so you can research it a bit harder and make sure I'm right.

Great deal on Sunex Tools - 2690SE at ToolTopia.com
up to E22 Can you get to the shank to measure it? a 5/8 bolt will be an e26 1/2" E24 from what I have been reading.

gbkeith….Im not 100% sure on the size but I had a set in hand that went up to a e24 from Napa and it was about 1 size too small so I figure thats its an E26 rather than jumping to an E28.
screwy….that amazon set does look like the best find I have found. Much easier to pay $35 and have it here then to look everywhere for it because its an odd find for sure. You could probably use the socket once on your truck and then sell the kit to someone like a spray liner place that will be looking for a tool as well if you wanted to get your money back

I think you will find these much more tolerable than the former TP-45 internal torx. The bolts are designed to be self locking by nature of cutting their own threads and after a few years seize in the holes. I broke 3 of the TP-45 when taking the bed off my '01 after 9 years. Then out came the angle grinder and cutoff wheel after only only 2 of the eight that could be removed. The external tool should be substantially stronger and rather than hurt the consumer I would prefer to think of it as finally addressing a problem. For the most part the assembly of many components on the vehicle does not look a long ways down the road toward disassembly.

As an after thought to all this when having the LineX done I will ask them to use antiseize on the bolts before re-installing them. I can't think of a reason to ever remove the bolts again but one never knows.
