Key in door open chime disable - with pictures!

I hate the chime when the key is in the igition and the door is open. I often have the door open when I'm backing in my fifth wheel or hitching/un-hitching, and it drives me crazy. I searched and found that there are several threads on this - but none I could find with pictures on the process of disabling the chime. So when I did this today, I decided to take some and post it for reference.

There are a couple of methods floating around out there - the one I chose was to remove the key barrel and cover up the copper tab that sense the key. It was REALLY easy - much less involved than it sounds, and I highly recommend this method. I'll post the pictures following, in order of the sequence of events.

First step is to remove three screws so that you can move the lower-half of the steering column cover. The cover will not come off due to the tilt-lever, but you don't need to remove it. You will be able to move it more than enough for the access you need.

Now you can see the ignition key barrel, and the spring-loaded ball that you have to depress while turning the key, to release the barrel. As noted in the picture, I used a small punch to depress the ball.

This shows a view into the empty key barrel holder/socket, and you can see the little "quarter-moon" plastic piece that you have to remove. This plastic piece holds the copper tab that senses the key. I just gently wiggled and tugged and it came out.

A poster in another thread said to cover the tab with electrical tape. I chose to use heat shrink tubing.

This was an easy fix to a pesky "feature", and I wish I had done it years ago! Hope these photos help someone else.

Did this quite a while ago. Works like a champ! A big benefit is that it doesn't disable the headlights "on" chime. Just the door open.

+1

I did the mod a while back where you remove one of the wires going to the key cluster. Only to find out it disabled the headlight chime, and maybe something else... dont remember now.

Any way..... I put it back to stock.

I'll be doing this mod soon. Reps sent to the OP.

Nice... I did this to my Oh6. Only one problem. When I hit the door lock switch on the driver's door, the locks all lock then a second later the driver's door unlocks. So I have to manually hit the door lock. Oh well right? B.
