I recently bought a 79 F150 but I dont know which engine it has in it. I was told it was a 302 out of a 87 Mustang. I went to the local parts store and told them I needed some plugs for a 87 Mustang 302. When I got home I pulled the plugs on the engine and the one ones I pulled off were huge compared to the ones I got. The plugs I pulled were Autolite 45s.
So I took the autolite plug with me when I went back to the store and they looked it up and apparently they used to use this sized plug on the older 60s - early 70s mustangs.
Is there any way to find out which engine I have? If I took pictures would someone on here be able to identify it?
You can start figuring out the year by posting the block casting number, and the 3 or 4 digit code next to it, down on the lower passenger side by the starter, by looking straight up from below. It may be covered in sludge.
I thought it might be a 289 when you told the plug size, thats what my 66 289 has in it. But now I see you have found out what it is. The 289 is a good little engine and it could be a Hi Po one.
I thought 289's had 6 valve cover bolts. I couldn't see clearly, but I saw 3 along the bottom and 1 at the top left corner. There isn't one in the middle and then on top back corner?

I only counted 5. 3 on the bottom and 2 on the top in each corner. There wasnt one in the middle. The valve cover is an aftermaker Edelbrock, maybe there is a hold in the top middle that isnt being used? I dont know. I only counted 5 bolts and the Stamped code I got off the block fits for a 289.
6 valve cover bolt holes per side: 221/260/289/302/351W.
How do you know the C5AE-6015-E block casting number is for a 289? It could be for a 260 or a 352/390.
Casting numbers cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers, are usually worthless for ID'ing engine sizes or what it's from.
Oh, I was told that the casting numbers would tell me. I found the casting number, did a google search of them and it came up on a couple different sites that this casting number was from a 65 289. How would I go about looking it for for sure? This is all new to me.
