I have a `79 F-150 Supercab 4x4. For those of you familiar with them, the only difference is the light duty f&r ends. Well, my 9" with the locker is going out, and I was wondering.. What all has to be changed in order to put a F&R from a 250/350 under this thing, or with it being the same frame and all, will it just bolt up!?
Also, what advantages will I have!? Or should I just stay with the light duty stuff!?
from what i know the rear ends are almost complete bolt end applications. ford 9" are pretty strong already. if you plan on going with a dana 60, 70 go sterling 10.5" then that is fine. Fro the front it depends if it is coil spring or not. I am not to familiar with older ford trucks. If it has IFS. converthing to a straight axle requires alot of fabrication. trust me i know.
The only advantage of going to a straight axle that i see is having a stronger driveline. I am running 39.5 boggers and needed stronger axles. I didn't have the money to build up my stock diffs. so i got bigger differentials instead. besides that you can get larger gear ratio's with the larger rear ends. and alot of them came with limited slip differentials and not the crapy open diff that i had
The older(79 and down) F150 4x4 supercabs were F250 chassis with LD axles, so, F250 or 350 axles of the same vintage should bolt right up.
Good Luck

Thanx dude! That's what I was wondering. Were the shock mounts and such pretty much identical, or what!? The current 9" housing under there is the 3rd or 4th housing in 5 years that I have had the truck. And it is getting harder and harder to find complete 9" unless you buy them aftermarket with hardened axles, etc, which for this being a work truck, and an every so often off road truck, I just don't want to invest THAT much into it. I would rather have the 1t f&r done. Plus, this will offset the 513 crate motor that is sitting here in the shop waiting until that 351m, currently running on 7 cylinders, completely dies! I guess the only thing I have to do now, is make new brakets for the rear end disc brakes, that are currently on the 9".
