is there such a thing as a heavy duty power steering pump avaliable. or can i have one made. i bought a truck a few months ago. it has a 9000# mile marker winch that works off of the power steering pump. and i noticed when im going real slow it's kinda hard to turn the wheel. i dont know how much the winch was used before. it was put on in 96. i would think under a heavy load (truck weigh's 7000#) over a long period of time using it. it would take alot out of the pump.
I think the first thing I would try would be going to the junkyard and finding a smaller pulley for your pump. Smaller pulley = higher rpm in the pump = higher pressure/ more power to the gear box. If that doesn't work, I believe there's a few posts on this board about various steering conversions, also in the tech articles, maybe one of those is the way to go? Good luck.
When I went to Kragen's to replace mine (stock for a 79 F250 4x4) I was told that I had two choices, standard and heavy duty. I went with the standard as it had a lifetime warranty and was the same as the one I had before.
Worth checking into, but the smaller pully is a great idea too. You might want to check if you have an actual in-line cooler too, I've seen these on a few P/S setups, they look like a 4" finned cooler near the pump.
I had an 85 cj-7 with a 10,500 lb. winch(MM) and the system had abypass such that when the winch wasn't engaged the fluid just circulated thru the system and didn't detract from the ps pump's ability to provide total capacity for the ps system needs of the vehicle------If you have the paperwork on the system i would evaluate it throurghly----if not then contact MM and obtain the needed documents----You DOn'T need a "superpump"---agood pump working with a properly functioning system will be acceptable!!!Ahigher pressure pump will give you alittle faster speed on your spool but I wouldn't waste the money-----just my .02 worth , fd :-X11
i have the same system that you had. i haven't used it yet, but i was just wondering if there is such a thing as a heavy duty pump. i guess i will try to look into getting a smaller pulley for the pump, also. thanks for all your input guys.
If you're intent on getting a "heavyduty" pump---I would call AGR in Arlington , tx------They make several pumps that putout significantly greater volume and pressure than the stock factory ps pumps----they aren't cheap----I'm sure they will have what you need !!!!!!!!!good luck , fd---they have ads in most 4x mags--!!! :-X11
Supposedy the GM type saiginaw pump is marginaly better than the ford ones. The bracket, pump and hoses can be found in mid 80's vans, and some 460 powered passenger cars.
