Lift pump recommendations

Hey fellas! I replaced my lift pump a year ago with one from Napa. Well it failed me and lt left me in the middle of a 2 lane 4 mile long bridge. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get one that will last? Thank you!

yea, travel back to 1991 and buy a case of them.
unfortunately these days almost everything is made out of chinesium.
i switched to a facet duralift electric pump around 20 years ago due to a failed lift pump on sunday without a spare. but i DID have the duralift on the shelf. so in it went and the lift pump was abandoned.

Yup, the best lift pump for the IDI is a Chevy big block 396/454 lift pump block off plate, a 30a relay and a Facet 40222N electric pump.

Relay wiring is easy.

1.pin 85 - ground.
2.pin 86 - jumper off FSS line, on top of IP.
3.pin 87 - red/positive wire of pump. (negative wire of pump goes directly to ground.Combine into pin 85 if you want.)
4.pin 30 - wire from constant 12v source (right off + battery is ok) w/ an inline fuse holder (5 amp fuse).

Issue free for years. No more junk lift pumps. No more worry about ruptures filling base full of fuel. No more cranking of engine to prime fuel, from tank to pump. This is how these trucks should have left the factory.

You're local international dealership can get you a OEM lift pump for about $150 that'll last 20 years.

$150 for a mechanical lift pump? That's insane. You can get a (Scratch & Dent) dura-lift for $80 right now:

no matter , a new duralift is still only $117 and will a whole lot longer than that $150 mechanical pump.

x7 on using a Duralift electric fuel pump.

The mechanical fuel pumps are trash. They probably don't even rebuild them anymore. There are probably 9 or 10 mechanical fuel pumps that circle the country and guys with old IDIs that don't browse forums buy and warranty return them again and again.

Pros on installing Facet Duralift:
1. No fuel in oil due to diaphragm failure on mechanical pump
2. It runs with key on which improves starting if there is air intrusion
3. Very simple to diagnose fuel delivery
4. Easy to swap if it fails, but it seems like they run forever
Cons? Maybe somebody knows of, I don't.

parts dealers hate them because they live forever.

Cons? Well, over on Oilburners this issue has been so beaten to death that there is a dedicated meme image in the event someone brings this up again. There may be individual variables that are not properly accounted for but some people love their Dura-Lift and others hate 'em. I have one on my N/A and it just barely does the job. If I hold 2nd gear at high RPM while pulling a steep hill the filter light will come on even with a fresh filter. There are many other pumps out there that are preferred because they will actually flow the proper volume at the proper psi. Yes the Dura-Lift is likely better than a cheap mechanical pump but it is far from the best option out there. If I had it to do over again I would never have installed the Dura-Lift. I have a Mr Gasket 105P with regulator waiting to go in.

the main problem is people put the wrong duralift pump on. the 40222 pumps is 9-11 psi. that i the recommended pump. the 40285 pump is only 4-7 psi. and that can cause fuel starvation at higher rpm's.

Yes I did start with the 40285 pump which was wrong but even with the 9-11psi model I still have fuel starvation at higher RPMs. I put a fuel pressure gauge between the fuel filter and the IP and at idle, with a fresh filter, the pressure maxed out at 5psi and would quickly drop with even a little throttle. I think the factory spec was that the IP only needed 1psi at inlet to stay happy but my Dura-Lift can't supply that at higher RPMs. The pump is so borderline that even the extra pull from the rear tank has a noticeable effect on fuel delivery and will trigger the filter light. I enjoy the convenience of an e-pump but if I had to choose between a mechanical lift pump or a Facet Dura-Lift I would actually choose the mechanical pump simply because it seems to provide adequate pressure and volume. I would be so happy if the Dura-Lift pumps pushed more fuel at pressure since they can be mounted in the engine bay rather than on the frame rail and the integrated pre-filter is great.

I often load 2 tons of stone, come to the traffic light exiting the supply yard and then need to climb a steep hill right across the road, not a long stretch, about 500 feet or so. By the time I am at the top I am in 3rg gear and never seen the engine starving for fuel. Tom should know the place (J. Manzo on Rt34 and Reids Hill Rd). Never measured the pressure as I have never seen a problem with mine.
One interesting thing I noticed. I have an independent switch for the pump and once drove at least 5 miles until I realized that the pump was off, and engine seemed to be happy... odd.
