Here is what I did with the spring. I put in 2 of them just to make sure I never have that problem again

I have had no problem ever since and the hand brake works really well now. It will keep the car from rolling back even on a pretty steep grade.

The stoppers I have at the end of the springs are just U-type cable clamps you can get at any hardware store. The springs are C880 (I think) from Orchard Hardware Supply.
