Power Steering and Trans Flush Night

Powersteering and Trans flush night was a success and man oh man did the X appreciate it!

Done per Mark Kovalsky's write up: Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles

Two nights ago I went and held up an Autozone for the Mercon V they had.

Me: "Give me all the Mercon Five and nobody gets hurt!!!"

Autozone Chick (cute too ): "What's that?"

Me: "Transmission fluid "

(She had a good laugh and showed me to the Mercon )

23 quarts and $150 later, I had these:

When doing this, you normally need two people, but I didn't since my truck has remote start:

According to Mark and a few others, you should use some clear 3/8 tubing. I went to Lowe's and got some (cost me all of 34 cents), but when it came time to flush the trans, no matter how I finagled the line, it just wouldn't fit over the return line
Lucky for me I had some 3/8 rubber fuel line and it happened to fit over the return line perfectly. (Btw, you need a 9/16 wrench to get the return line off)

In order to keep track of how much I'm putting in and taking out, I used an empty Rotella oil container. I drained and replaced 4 quarts at a time:

I flushed 20 quarts out of the trans (per Mark's write up wasting the last 1-2 quarts) and flushed 2.5 out of the powersteering. The other .5 was used to top the trans off.

Results:

-The trans now shifts ooooohhhhh so smooth, it took a min or two to adjust, but once it got situated, it was sweet....

-The powersteering still complains a little, but not as much, braking is considerably better now. I'll have extract some fluid and add a little something to quiet it down, but it feels so much better now.

Cost savings:

Called the dealership this morning and the costs are as follows:

Trans flush: $189.95+tax= $205.62
Powersteering flush: $119.95+tax= $129.84

Total with tax: $335.46

Cost for 23 quarts of Trans fluid (tax included): $149.14

What I saved by doing it myself: $186.32

Both services are easier than you think to perform, save you a TON of money over the dealer, and make you and your truck feel better.
