Glad I could help and I think you should be good to go. If I remember correctly pulling the shaft down was to check the overall length to the end of the shaft to see if it was a Y block or 289 type...

Dug out my back up distributor and measured it and confirmed with the shop manual that the 4.991 to 4.996 spec is with the gear/shaft pushed up.

Like Tedster said, I drill a small 1/16 hole in all my replacement caps. Vented to the atmosphere caps have been illegal in this country since the 70's.
The replacement caps you buy that say VENTED...
