Where are you having the work done ? Your Explorer does not have an oil pressure safety switch that prevents the fuel pump from working in the event the oil pressure drops off , Thats a Chevy feature...

MPG (2wd vs. 4wd)

I get 14 or 15 City , 16 or 17 Hwy . If I see it drops off somewhat that means its usually time for new spark plugs . Thats on a 90 F150 , 4.9L 4X4 , M5OD , 3.08 & 31.10.50 15 In tires , 183K miles .
