Do you have the MSD red power lead connected to the battery cable at the starter solenoid and the black power ground lead to the battery ground...

Get the adjustable ignition spark tester so you can measure the spark voltage.

Meanwhile try setting the plug gap to .035" and see if there is any difference in the manifold vacuum level at failure.

There may not be a problem when using the Offy "C" since the carb sits correctly with the fuel bowls over the intake plenum which shields from the heat rising off the exhaust manifold.

The Offy C is a good choice.
The Dual plane doesn't seem to offer any better low end response but the split runner does seem to be a restriction on airflow for the upper part of the power band....
