Don't know if it's okay. Maybe if you lay some sort of padding, or do it very gently. It's going to be a pain to get it back up the way it should be though.

I've not done it, but I've heard, that you have to adjust the arm on the sender by bending it to get it dialed in. Especially aftermarket senders.
