Yes you can switch back and forth between Auto and Manual modes at will, going down the highway. Just use care when doing so that you don't "overshoot" the selection with the shift lever.

I love manual mode when pulling heavy. Only way to fly imo. I too agree that Ford really got this engine/transmission combo right. Still very happy with mine, whether towing or not.
