Friendly SMOG station in San Diego,CA?
 

I have the dreaded task of getting my 2000 F350 smogged. Does anymone know of some "Diesel Friendly" smog stations in the north San Diego (Calrsbad) area? Will I need to remove my DP chip or just set it to the stock setting? If you can PM me that would be VERY helpful,

My experience has been you are better-off with a very KNOWLEDGEABLE smog station instead of a "friendly" one. The ones that know what they're doing will give you a fair testing, per the rules, which are not stringent.

The dummies will fail you for having an aftermarket air filter (which is completely legal to have).

You can leave your DP Tuner hooked and in plain sight!!! Jody & Diane have applied for CARB exemption, and the smog station will have it on the list. Do set it to stock, though, to help keep it closer to OEM.

Marv is dead-on about the aftermarket air filters!!

Your CCV Mod may fail you, and make certain if your truck came with a CAT, it is on. Big time failure there if it is missing!!!!

In fact, diesels are the most modified engines in California today!

They're wise to us.

The most ridiculous reason they will fail us is for having a regulated return, dual-feed fuel system. It's a no-no, and no one is explaining why.

I will need to find one of those CCV housings since I straightpiped mine with a pice of exhaust :-banghead What about the Dahl fuel filter, will that also cause a failure?

No, Dahl is a fuel filter. Fuel filters are in Catagory I in the following:

Thanks for the info! Where is that list from so I know once I print it out and take it with me? I also found the CCV adaptor piece so it should only take about 10 minutes to put it back to normal. Thanks again for the info! :-X25:-

That list is a California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair publication. They are the guidelines for the smog check shops.

They should each have a copy of them on their premises, but some of them have undoubtedly NOT even read them, or understand them, because they seem to not follow them as carefully as they should.

I don't think DPtuner is on the list still. But I just took mine down last week and left it in at a state smog only station and they said it passed. It is stock accept for that and has a cat so it passed. There are so many going for exemtion right now that they aren't failing them as long as they don't smoke and have the cat. Good luck I kept puting mine off also but when I did no problem. Chet

My guess is the adjustable regulator pressure is what they're crying about.

What year did they start putting the cat on as mine never had one? I emailed Jody at DPTuner, but have not heard anything back. I have read many threads that mentioned he had submitted and therefore is exempt but didn't see him on the list either. I do have a stock setting so I will set it there and hopefully pass. What is causing the P1000 and P603 code failures? I read my codes and nothing shows up right NOW:-innocent

If the tech can see a "tuner", they've got to then see a certification number on it.

"Pending" isn't good enough.

Looks like removing them for the smogging process is what you've got to do.

Wrong on the tuner. If they know what they are doing and the tuner is up for exemptiion
but not yet passed it is okay and will pass. Read the spec's. I have your same lariat f350 4x4 cc lb but 99 and it has a cat from the factory. It will tell you under the hood. If not you have to look up your pcm numbers.I went to a california smog only station and that was there word. How stock is your truck, turbo etc..
I also had a DPtuner on my pod infront of them it passed.

Irregardless of Tuner on or off the list, If you have the time and can afford to have your truck down See if Jody can flash your PCM with a "eco-friendly" tune that way you can just remove the chip before you go in.

UPDATE - It passed no problem WITH the chip installed! The only item I had to remove was the CCV mod. Since DP Tuner has submitted for the approval from CARB, they are exempt at this point and do not need an OE. I was told that Ford did not have catalytic converters until the 6.0L by the shop I took it to so anything with a 7.3L was fine with aftermarket air intakes and exhaust. They did the snap test and on the stock setting there was no smoke so it passed. After all the worrying and reading it was a very easy test and now it is time to relax! :-partybud:-drink:-bigparty Thanks again to FTE for all the info.
