Installing an Auto Meter transmission Temp gauge.

I am going to install an aftermarket gauge on my Excursion. Just would like to know the best place to install the probe. Hopefully it isn't that hard. Thanks for your time.

Nope, it's easy.

Test port on the drivers side, just above the pan.

Is that test port already the right size and thread pitch for the temp probe or do you have to get reducers or adapters?

Direct fit.

What are the part numbers of the auto meter transmission gauges that fit easily in the test port to install? I have a 2000 7.3 excursion. Thanks!

2253 is the autometer part number I recently used on a 2002 F350

Installed very nice and clean, didn't lose a drop of fluid.

Make it dual purpose

If there is something else you want to monitor, just add another sensor in the appropriate orifice and hook them up to a double throw switch. It will send the signal to the gauge from both of them, and show the one with the circuit being complete.

Toreador_Diesel - what gauge do you have? that part# you posted is just a sender?

I bought the truck with a pyrometer and boost gauge, looks like they are both Autometer Z-Series. I am looking to add a transmission temp gauge that matches. Looks like it would be Autometer 2615 gauge. Ive read some info that's dated 10 years back that says this gauge wont fit in the 'test port'. Not sure if that info is still current, if the gauge in fact does fit nowadays, or if there is an adapter or something that'll make it fit?

If I install a Mag Hytec trans pan that has a fitting for temp sensor... Is the test port still the preferred location for the sensor, or in the pan? Probably work fine in either one and may be a preference thing, but I am finally pulling the trigger on some of this stuff for mine. I am leaning towards the Max Tow gauge and the auto meter pod that sits it on top of the column though.

In the past Mark K has said that the test port would be a better location for the sensor. Of course he also said that those bigger pans don't really help with anything either. ;) :) (But they do look pretty cool!)
There is constant flow past the test port where as with the pan port you may have the sensor in the boundary layer or a semi-stagnant spot that wouldn't reflect the most accurate temp. :-X22
I run the Glow Shift Max Tow gauges for both trans temp and rear diff temp (I use an engine oil temp there). I really like having both the digital readout as well as the full sweep gauge face. :-X22

Thanks for the info. Test port it is. I realize the pan is a frivolous thing and probably adds no real benefit other than looking awesome. But i will have something else pretty to look at during oil changes :D
