Water Pump Pulley
 

Today my water pump pulley broke off? No one local has one, so I will probably order one up from Ed. My question is, I need to drive the truck about 5 miles to get it home? Rather than R&R on the side of the highway. Would anyone recommend otherwise, to have it towed or such? Temps are really nice last few days, in the 60's just curious about the internal parts, since the water pump will not be driven. And another thing, wow these trucks are hard to turn and brake without power!! The break was a little odd to me? All of the bolts are still tight and mounted to the water pump with small pieces of the pulley still being held on. The pulley is not rusted through, and appears to be in good shape otherwise? It sits flat on a bench and quick eyeball measurement it does not appear to be out of round. Just a fluke thing I guess? Hopefully this is not caused by my issue with the "shudder" at low throttle input.

Firts time hearing that but others here might. Seems like a valid question, our trucks do have great cooling capabilities, I wonder if you could limp it home quickly.

That's really odd, never heard of it happening myself, and if you can break it, I've probably done it already LOL. I would not drive it myself- if you need to break, and can;t fast enough, you're on the hook for a nice negligence lawsuit. The truck will run cool enough, but the brakes would concern me. These things stop about as fast as an ice cube on a greasy hill without power brakes.

No dealer in AR or OK has any. Closest sources to Rogers AR that have any, are in Hutchison KS and Kansas City MO.

I did choos to drive it fyi, temp never even moved really. No fun with the steering brakes sucked but got the job done. My main concern was with the internal cooling? not pumping through the engine, hopefully everything is ok.

I saw Ed's price, Rock auto has them $43 I believe, seems a little ridiculous for what it is? Simple pulley, before I pull the trigger on new, Im going to check out a few builders lots.

Before buying from Rock Auto...for 43 bucks, you have another option.

The original part number (it's now obsolete because it was replaced by: 2C3Z8509AA) of F81Z8509AA = MSRP: $29.57 !!

If you're thinking of buying it from another source, might as well be gen-u-ine Ford instead of a pulley that might be made in China.

If I understand the way it broke, my bet is that the belt was over-tightened for a long, long time and it fatigued the metal.

What would cause it to be too tight? Tensioner idler and belt are all about 1 year old? I guess prior to this it could have fatigued? But the reason for replacement of the tensioner was loose belt.

I don't have the answer for sure, but I would take a long look at it when you install the new one just to be sure.
