SRW door sticker survey
 

For those of you who have 4x4 Single Rear Wheel trucks, would you mind posting the information from your door sticker please? Here is an example of the information I am looking for:

Build Date: 05/99
GVWR: 8800 lbs
Front GAWR: 4800 lbs with LT265/75R16E tires @ 55 psi
Rear GAWR: 4670 lbs with LT265/75R16E tires @ 50 psi
Axle Code: C1
WB (Wheel Base): 156"

Then, if you have the factory springs still, I need to know if your truck has 5 leaf springs on the rear. (Don't worry about the size, thickness, deflection etc), just count the springs.

Lastly, do you have a helper (Auxiliary) spring? (Yes/No).

I am looking to confirm a relationship between tire PSI as listed on the door jamb to GAWR for each axle. I have checked 8 different SRW trucks at work and was surprised at the differences in GAWR (especially the rear) on otherwise identical looking trucks.

So, the whole purpose of this was to research and possibly confirm an incredible statement I heard over the weekend from some rock crawling co-workers. I was working in our San Francisco branch this past week and the guys were talking about their weekend plans. One of them was on the hunt for a Super Duty Single Rear Wheel axle. Apparently the Sterling 10.5" axles have developed a reputation for being quite strong and durable and a lot of guys like to use them in their rock crawling machines. These machines are mostly home built off road vehicle with massive tires and expensive suspension components. Apparently the Sterling axles can accept axle ratios at high as 7.17 and have a GAWR of 9750 lbs. So, they think these axles are super strong and are only limited by the weight the springs and tires can handle.

Anyway, the claim is, it doesn't matter if the truck is an F250 or F350, nor does it matter what the door sticker says about the axle rating. It only matters if it's a Super Duty Ford '99-'05 because these guys believe all the trucks shipped with the same exact axle. The difference in GAWR on the door sticker is determined by the psi of the tires and not necessarily the spring pack that was installed. The spring pack is determined by the options list checked off when the truck is ordered (heavy duty, camper, plow package etc).

I was a bit surprised by this idea because I always thought the springs made the difference in rating. However, now that I've seen quite a few door stickers....I am inclined to believe that the GAWR is determined by the Tire Pressure listed on the label, or at least this was how Ford came up with the various axle load ratings. Ford must have some good reasons for the variety of ratings because it would be simple to list 80 psi on all the trucks and call it good. But they didn't and as a result, we have all these variety load ratings on the stickers.

Looking at the results of this post and the stickers from my shop trucks..it appears on the rear axle:
50 psi=4670 lbs.
55 psi=4970 lbs.
60 psi=???
70 psi=6084 lbs
80 psi=6830 lbs

(I didn't list 'kelwar's' rating because his tires are different...2WD?)

Does anyone have a sticker that lists 60 psi with the LT265/75R16E tires? That seems to be the missing link. GAWR should be about 5500 lbs-ish?

So, if this idea has any merit....then is it reasonable to assume that we should air up to 80 psi when we have heavy loads in the bed? I've been using 80 psi myself for years.

I believe that the rock-crawling guys are correct in their thinking that the SuperDuty Sterling housings are all the same strength, but you are very correct, too.

The differences in weight ratings are to maintain certified-safe handling characteristics for legal liability reasons. This takes into consideration which spring pack is installed, as well as the tire construction ratings, inflation pressure, and class rating of the trucks.

I have a 10.5 LS 3.73 out of a 99 F250 sitting in my shop. Its been on CL for months and no responses.
I guess they do last, if no one needs one.:-X22

My truck is also a 4x4 I think the reason for the different tires is because mine is an xl although I have seen xl that come with 265s

Thanks for the follow up. I wonder why your truck came with different tires. Interesting for sure. Did you notice that everyone's axle code was C1 or not listed? Weird.
