How to Change Oil Pump on '95 F-150 4.9L
 

Several years ago I replaced the oil pan gasket myself and was able to do it just by dropping the pan onto the cross member and fishing the gasket from one side of the pan to the other just by feel. Now I think I may need to replace my oil pump.

Three questions:

1. Can you clean the oil screen just by dropping the pan onto the cross member?

2. Is it possible to remove the oil pump on a '95 4.9L without jacking up the engine (i.e., just by lowering the pan again)?

2. Does anyone have any good pictures of what the internals of the oil pump/crank case? (I've seen the schematics in Haynes and Ford manuals, but I wanted to see real photos).

Any tips on performing this?

ive done several of these pumps and your best bet is to jack up the engine, and just put some wooden blocks between the engine mounts and where they mount on the engine at. service information tells you to remove the upper intake plenum but ive gotten away without having to do that. and cleaning the oil screen youll still have to raise the engine because without doin so the pan is only going to drop like 2 inches and that isnt going to be enough seeing as how the pickup goes deeper into the pan then that.

oh! and yes youll have to remove the raidator for clearance

Ford boy is correct in everything except for removing the radiatior.

usually on the v8 you can get away without removing it but the inline 6 is a longer block even with the fan and clutch off the water pump shaft still will scrape the fins. might not cause damage like produce a leak but itll scrape up them fins tho. its your call tho haha

1. I've never messed with the engine mounts, how many are there and relative locations?

2. Sounds like i may get away without having to remove the intake manifold, how about the connection to the exhaust?

3. What is the best jack point to raise the engine from?

theres 2 engine mounts and both of them only have 1 nut on top to disconnect them from the engine. ive never had to do anything with the exhaust it usually moves right along with the engine. may have to disconnect a mount or two. and just put a wood or rubber block under the oil pan and jack it up there. and while its holding the motor up put wood blocks (or what i used was hockey pucks) between each motor mount and bracket.

i have always removed the intake on all the trucks i have done so you dont' beat the back of the intake up on the fire wall with the extra time it take its sometimes worth it since you dont' have to struggle
