replacement of door hinge pins
 

Bought a 1986 f-150 and the driver side bottom hinge is shot. I found a replacement kit at local shop but have never done this. Do I need to take the complete hinge off and drill/press out the old pin or what is the best direction.

I have had good luck by cutting the pins in half with my Dremel tool with one of the fiber reinforced cutoff wheels. I then slip a small prybar in between the two halves and pry them apart, this pushes the pin halves out of the holes. Next, drive them out the rest of the way with a hammer and punch. Pull the door away enough to separate the hingle halves so you can access the bronze bushings.... drive the bushings out with a hammer and punch. To replace the bushings, I like to use a pair of slip-joint pliers to press them into the holes. I don't recommending trying to hammer them in because I have had the bushings chip and or break... bad idea. Also when pressing in the new bushings it may be necessary to add some type of hollow spacer between the hinge and the pliers lower jaw, this will allow you to completely seat the new bushings. Now you're ready to install the new pins, I like to put a thin layer of grease on the pins before sliding them home. The pins install from the bottom up, there is a knurled section next to the head on the pin. It may be necessary to use a hammer and punch to fully seat them, once the pins are installed snap the E-clips on and you're done. Check the door for smooth operation, I like to squirt a little light oil into the hinge joints to keep them lubed up. It's not too difficult maybe a little time consuming.
