Old F-150

Ok all you Ford goers, Let's see if some one can help me with what might be wrong with my old pickem up, I have a 1985 F-150, 5.0L/302 w/AOD trans. Just put on new headers and exhaust, wires, plugs, rotor & cap, new carb. Even with the old stuff on, the truck would not go over 65 MPH and with the new stuff it still does't. So I took it to the shop and they disconnected the electrical connections to the carb and advanced the timing and adjusted the carb. It runs better, but I still bearly get to 70 MPH after that. Is there any thing I can do to get it running faster on the highway? Oh I am also only getting about 8 MPG, I should be getting at least 12 - 15 MPG. Well there it is, if any one can help Please let me know.

Fuel filter?
Put a fuel pressure gauge on it and drive it, see what the fuel pressure does?

hows the oil breather look? is it dripping?
new air filter?
pcv?

whats timing set to?
idle ok?

is it just running out of power? what RPMS?

what size tire? what gears?

Hey guys thanks for reply's, I do have a new fuel filter, when I took it to a shop out here they said I was getting plenty of pressure and volume. I do have a new air & breather filters & PCV. Now the breather filter does have some oil on it. As far as timing the shop set it, he said he advanced it a little, how much I don't know. Tires, I have 31 x 10.50 - 15's, Gears in it I have no idea.

do you have a tach. If so what does it read at 65 mph. if not install an aftermarket one. I have basically the same set up. I don't think I've ever taken it over 65 any how.

Also there's a gear id tag on face of your rear diff held in by on of the bolts. Might have to shine it up a bit to tell....

Thanks, I think I will get a tach, and I will look for that tag. Also does this truck have a ECM (Electronic Control module)? A computer.

My buddies chevy did this once but it was worse. It wouldn't go over 45 mph. He replaced the heads with some reman ones and all was good. Also check your cat it may be clogged.

Nope no problem with exhaust brand new, new headers, pipes, cats, mufflers.

Does your distributor have a place for a vacuum line? If it does, you do not have a computer.

Old F-150 08-20-2010 10:30 AM

Nope no vacuum lines. Electronic ignition, Now where is the dawg gone thing, I looked everywhere. Some one said that it would be on the passenger side kick panel, couldn't find it there. Any help?

Sometimes the computer is located right over the hump area under the dash. I am not sure what setup you have, since starting sometime in 85 I believe they went to fuel injection on the 302.

You mentioned you put on a new carb. What kind of carb is it?

Old F-150 08-20-2010 02:27 PM

Yea they had both carbs & FI I have a 2bbl Stock

Fordzilla80 08-20-2010 04:42 PM

I've seen them on the firewall, and under the seat on the floor.

Old F-150 08-20-2010 05:16 PM

Well it looks like I've got a lot of places to start looking. Not on the firewall or in the engine compartment, so I guess I'll look under the dash area.
