Will not rev over 1000 rpms sitting still

I am a first time diesel owner and I have had the truck for about a month now. It is a 2004 F-250 FX4 crew cab with the 6.0 V8. The truck runs great and has tons of power except for the other day i was on a slight hill (not very steep at all) in some grass. I hit the gas and had very little power. It would not rev over 1000 rpms. I finally had to put it in 4 wheel low to crawl up the hill. It does the same thing if i hold the brake and hit the accelerator (trying to power break). I can put the truck in park and it will rev just fine. It runs great under normal driving conditions with great power. Is there some kind of traction control or something that is keeping my truck from reaching high rpms to keep the tires from spinning? Please help!!!

Welcome to FTE rbh22988!!!

ok. I'll try to help but need a little more info here. How many miles on the truck, last service (oil and fuel filters), production date since an 04 can have an 03 or an 04 motor in it. What kind of oil do you use and have you scanned it for codes?

Are you saying that on the street/highway your truck runs just fine, it just won't go up a hill???

After you answer npccpartsman's questions, here is a thread from the Tech Folder that might help to look over:

The production date is 01/04, it has 167,000 miles on it, and i just changed the fuel filter, air filter, all the differential fluids, and oil about 500 miles ago. I used Rotella 15W 40 oil. I have not scanned it for codes yet.

And yes, it runs just fine on the street/highway and just fine up hills. It has plenty of power during normal driving. Like I said in the original post, I had just backed off of a small incline off the side of my driveway and tried to pull up and i could put the pedal to the floor and it wouldn't give it enough power to even make the wheels spin.

Another example, I can hit the brakes and put the gas pedal to the floor and it wont rev past 1,100 rpms. I dont even really have to hold the brake hard to keep it from moving. Is this normal?

npccpartsman 08-15-2010 09:17 AM

No it's not normal.

I know you just changed fuel filters (hope you did them both), but you need to check your fuel pressure and have the truck code scanned. Did you notice any smoke while this was going on? What was your fuel level at the time?

sounds like you are having an issue build boost.
fuel pressure can do it.
check for a boost leaks at the blue cac boots.
you may have a few injectors going down.
could be a volume issue with the high pressure oil pump.
lot of could be's

The only thing that I don't understand is why it has no power issues during normal driving. It has the normal turbo lag, but when the turbo kicks in, it has great power. Is there anywhere i can go to get the code scanned or will i need to buy one myself?

was this right when the engine was cold? i have an 03 that is pretty nut less unless warmed up even in the summer. i dont like it at all and not sure whats exactly wrong but i know my uncle had an 05 and had way more power when cold.

rbh22988 08-15-2010 10:27 AM

The engine was not completely warmed up but it is a very slight incline. I don't feel like that should have been an issue. And when i have tried power braking, the engine has been completely warmed up and it still won't rev over 1,100 rpms no matter how long I hold down the gas

cheezit 08-15-2010 10:49 AM

you may be hitting the converter stall rpm.

when i was pulling an old piece of farm equipment out of the weeds the other day. i let my truck warm up for about 15 min, temp gauge was about a quarter or so and still couldnt even pull this out (about 2000lbs and had wheels/tires) i ended up putting it in 4 low with lockin my hubs even cuz i just knew it would have more power in low. but anyways if anyone has had this problem and found a problem would be greatly appreciated. i just always told myself it was normal

Did you ever figure out what was causing your issue?

Akranz1507 07-10-2022 07:53 PM

Did you find a fix for you issue with the engine not going over 1100 rpm when power braking?
because i have a 2002 excursion v10 with the exact same issue. If you could let me know if you found a fix that would be great.
