Axle ratio from VIN?

I am contemplating buying another Sport-Trac. It is an '04, VIN 1FMDU77K34VAxxxxx. The one I have now has a 4.10 ratio and doesn't get the mileage that I would like. Can you get the axle ratio from the VIN I posted? I would rather not buy another one with the low gears.

Does it not have a Vehicle Certification Label on the door?
Axle codes are:
42 — 4.10 ratio, non-limited slip
46 — 3.73 ratio, non-limited slip
D2 — 4.10 ratio, limited slip
D4 — 3.73 ratio, limited slip

Did you try taller tires to raise the final drive ratio? I think 265/75R16's will fit without much of an issue. Higher gearing does not always mean better mileage either..........

I have 3.73's and wish I had the 4.10's.

It's about 3 hrs. from me and I haven't gone and looked at it yet. I'm not terribly worried about the mileage of the one I have now and have done nothing in an attempt to improve the it. My daughter just totaled her car and I was contemplating letting her have it and buy a newer one for my wife. I was hoping to get one with the OD transmission and higher axle ratio and hopefully higher MPG.

I double checked the VIN and noticed that I had it wrong. The correct one is 1FMDU77K34UA28844.

Call any ford dealer with the vin and they can tell you, just ask for parts, and tell them you need a ring and pinion for that vin and ask what ratio it is.

The parts department will tell you to go read the axle code on the VC label and call back.
