Hey everone,
I want to welcome our newest member, raystankewitz. He lives in the Bay Area and has a pretty cool F250.

Welcome to our group. We are an informal group that chats a lot in this forum and gets together on the rare occasion. YOu will find some smart people in this group who know a lot about engines, Fords, and how to keep them going.

Once again, welcome.

Me and my ride

Hello All! (fastmover, you asked, you get)

*stands up and clears throat, taps mic to see if it's on*

Hi, I'm Ray and I live in Fremont, SF East Bay. I've owned a few Fords in my life, including a 351C-4V motivated '71 Ranchero. I have worked in the amusement park industry, worked at the San Jose Ford plant (yeah, I might have built your truck!), Peterbilt when they were in Newark, taught transmissions at Sequoia Institute in the late '80's and I currently work for a school district as an electronics tech. Married with 2 kids/2grandkids.

My latest acquisition is a '97 F250HD XL trim that was a lien sale truck from a tow yard where my brother works. 7.5L/E4OD/4.10 gears combo, 4X4, seems to have a camper or trailer package of some kind. There's a harness under the back with a 7 pin connector and the truck has a rear sway bar. It was originally a GSA ordered truck, delivered to the Gov't in Nevada. Still have the GSA driver's handbook in the glove box! It appears to have 49-state smog req's. Cut loose by the GSA in '02 at auction, driven by notorious owner #2 until Feb of this year. I'm owner #3.

Needs a solenoid pack replacement because 2nd gear goes away once the trans warms up. Throws code 622, too. I can shift it to 2nd at about 10 and back to drive at 30 and it seems to run very smooth. New SP due tomorrow via UPS. Maybe. They're being picky, not just dumping it on the front steps as usual.

Here she is, "The Great White Buffalo". Note the water-cooled LH headlight. That's my work van in the first pic background, a '00 E250, 4.2L/E4OD/3.55 combo. Has a hard time getting out of it's own way. :-innocent

I plan to fix the small body dings, repaint her white with maybe a two-tone treatment and add some chrome such as the grille, the headlight surrounds and the bumpers. The front one has some 'extra' holes in it from a guard of some sort. I think some wheel arches would help break up the expanse of white along with some factory 'Alcoa-look' wheels and some BFG M&S tires. I plan to redo the front seat, add a tach cluster and a lace-on leather wheel cover among other things.

this replaces my 1973 IHC 1010 1/2 ton longbed pickup. That beast feels that 5mpg is just fine! Not to mention the lack of parts. At least the 345/TF727/3.54 geared Dana 44 locker package is dependable.

Well, this post kinda rambled on so I'll cut it short. If there's get-togethers here in NorCal, I'm game.

Nice to meet y'all,

Ray

lol u might what to swap in a dad 60 up front but nice truck u know ur not going to get much better mpg right

nevrenufhp 06-17-2010 10:31 PM

Do you still have the Kornbinder 1010? It would get better mpg with a diesel swap. Just beating Joe to saying it.
The 460 with 4.10 gears cant be too great on gas either.

lucky_strike 06-17-2010 11:54 PM

thats a nice truck you got there!

Thanks, guys

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll stick with the TTB because I don't think I'll ever go 'serious' off-roading with it. Snow, yeah but deep off-road, no. Early Broncos are for serious off road work! LOL!

The F250 bagged 9.1 mpg last week so it does get better mpg than the 1010 but it doesn't ride as smooth at the IHC. The 'Binder has torsion bars up front.

The 'Binder would make a very nice 4BT conversion. I drove one (3/4 ton) for a week that had a little work done to the pump/injectors and I think it had a Garrett turbo from something else grafted on. Trans was an Allison, I think. Darn thing would roast the weenies until you took your foot out of it. Got 20+ mpg for the owner and he had a very heavy right foot. I got about 24 mpg. Plenty of power, too.

You know, how that 'Binder gets such lousy mileage with a 350 cfm Holley list 0-7448, I'll never know.

Ray

in my old idi avg 20 to 23 with 37s

nevrenufhp 06-18-2010 05:37 PM

The IH should get IH power in it. I say a DT360! Make that sucker haul! Of course, with pump work, and a good turbo.

the BT's are real popular as is the Nissan 3.3 that was used in the scouts. I've had the chance to drive a few converted 'Binders and my favorite was the 4BT/Allison combo.

Now to shoehorn a DT360 into a 'Binder, better have a bunch of patience. It might not be too long but I would worry about the weight sitting on that torsion bar front end, even rebuilt. You have to see it to believe it. Bars work on the upper control arms, shocks hook to the upper arms and a funky bracket on the frame.

That would be a bit much weight for the poor torsion bars. The 360 weighs 1200+ pounds. Them 4BT's are fetching a higher price than the 6BT's lately.
