DEF $$$

Went to a ford dealer in Fergus falls,MN to pick up some DEF and they didn't have any gallon jugs in stock yet. :-X09 I went to the parts counter and asked for it and the guy had a look on his face like I had asked for a muffler bearing. He then tells me to go to service and ask them. I go to service and they tell me that I need to go to parts for the gallon jugs. He did know what I was talking about and said he had a 55 gallon drum and it was six bucks a gallon. WHAT:confused: ? I thought it was around $2.50 for a gallon. Went to a auto parts dealer and baught blue def for $4.80.

What auto parts dealer did you go too ??

I went into a Kragen/O'Rielly Auto Parts today and asked about it and he thought I was joking with him.

How much did you get for $4.80 ??

JReinert 06-08-2010 04:41 AM

O'rielly is where I got it, but they had to order it. It will be in today. They can get one gallon,2.5 gal,55gal,250gal if I remember correctly. I went with the 2.5gal and I think it was $11.50, I ordered four of them.

I know this has been covered elsewhere, but I am just curious. How large is the DEF tank, and how often do you have to fill it?

I think the dealer is the last place to buy any type of fluid. I'm sure it can be found cheaper elsewhere. I would think the best places would be Pilot, FlyingJ, Loves or any other big truck stops. I'm looking at getting the BMW 335d and I'm sure BMW dealers have quite a mark up on DEF just like Ford dealers would. I would think by now there would be an API certification for DEF to have some sort of standard.

Good find, nice tool.
I guess a half hour drive isn't too bad for this stuff as long as I make use of the trip and stock up. It will only get better as more and more places begin to stock DEF.

Tried calling one of the local places the guy didn't know what DEF was and had no idea if they sold it... He also ended up hanging up on me when he tried to transfer my call, Must have been his first day.
I will have to try to call them back later.

I can think of a common source of DEF... urea...

But that might get me in trouble with Ford.

I agree with Echo95.Heavy duty over the road trucks built after Jan 1st are all equipped with DEF injected ATDs.All major truck stops should be set up to supply the fluid. That should be your best bet.

Used the DEF finder link provided above to find DEF at a Cummins dealer in Albany, NY. Thanks for the link! Paid $8/gallon, but I'm a few hundred miles from home and needed it, so what could I do? Hope to find it at home cheaper and then I'll stock up. BTW, I went through a tank a lot faster than the owner's manual said I would, but maybe the dealer didn't fill the tank all the way.

Try any truck stop in your area. I bought 2 1/2 gal. for $11.99 at Fly J truck stop.
