Gear change in F450?

My 1990 F450 5 spd, has a dana 80 with 513's in it , and let me tell you, its time to change that ratio. I'm thinking 4.10? The truck weighs 7000 lbs .Would 373's require a new carrier?
Any sources for the ring and pinion? thanks clan for the infor!

This may help you....... http://www2.dana.com/pdf/5332.pdf

5.13!

Wanna haul my house?

Njdub 05-27-2010 05:51 PM

Did that thing come stock with 5.13s??!??

IDIDieselJohn 05-27-2010 06:31 PM

All F450's either came with 4.56, 4.63 or 5.13

So yes it's stock.

Njdub 05-27-2010 06:42 PM

Oh yeah I guess you'd need them for heavy towing just seems high.

texasjack 05-27-2010 09:33 PM

Yes, its very high, and not much good for hwy, which is what there is alot of here.
410's would be better and still let me haul, gears seem pricey...

johnboggs21 05-27-2010 09:35 PM

hell 3.55s are fine unless you are moving ungodly heavy loads.

FORDF250HDXLT 05-27-2010 10:49 PM

thats what f450's are made for though.hauling, and hauling like they mean it.
those gears are good for that truck imho.i wouldn't change them.
if you find your not hauling the loads that require some low gears, perhaps you don't need an f450?
she's going to feel doggy with 4:10's with a real load on her.what are you hauling mostly? rock/dirt/gravel etc or? hows the truck used?
the cheapest way would be to score a whole rear axle i should think from the salvage yard.......using John's info, look for one with a set of 4.56 gears.any higher than that, then your hauling stuff that a pickup truck could haul, and a f450 is the incorrect rig to have imho.
f450's are not pickups keep in mind.if your getting behind the wheel to drive it anywhere without the intent to make $ with it,you bought the wrong rig or have loads of extra $ just to burn in fuel.:D

Gawd I wish I could remember that riddle ... Something like:

High is low and low is slow, low is high and high is fast (and I forget the rest, something about "low is quicker ... blah blah")

The point is the higher the number the lower the ratio, slower top end but with more grunt, so the higher number is considered a lower gear!

I know this post is a little old but I have been pondering if I should change gears in my truck. Its the same axle as this guys cept I have 4.56 gears.
I made a custom flat bed on it which I use to haul my toyota rock crawler.
My truck is only bout 6000 pounds empty and 8500 pounds loaded.
The main problem I have with my gear ratio is on the freeway. For me to do 70 mph I am turning 2750 rpms. Which is brutal on the fuel mileage.
Also when I need to climb a hill on the freeway, like going over the summit on I80 I have to drop out of 4th gear. In 3rd gear for me to do 45 mphs I have to turn damn near 3k. Diesels can run at this rpm ok but it really heats my engine up more then I like and it clogs up traffic.
I think if I had 4.10s in the rear I would be able to stay out of overdrive on the hills and be able to do atleast 55 without running my engine so hard.
The sucky part of it is I cant find gears for this old of a axle.
I am gonna 2008 dana 80 with 40k, I think its 4.13 gears for 400 bucks.
Seams like the best way to go.
Other option would be to swap my 16" rims for 19.5" rims and tires. I think this would make freeway driving much better but the 19.5 tires are a lot more $$$.
Sorry for the long post.
It looks like crap now but ive been going thru everything and body work is almost done, so painting is near.

then you would need different rims for the bolt pattern?

crazykooter 10-10-2011 05:59 PM

I have 10 lugs on my current dana 80. Did they change the lug pattern?

Phy 10-11-2011 11:18 AM

Yeah, the F-Superdutys have 10 lugs on a 7.25" bolt circle. The later 10-lug pattern is different...
The hubs might interchange, though...

Ok bummer guess ill try and find out what year of dana 80's have same lug pattern.
Sucks since I can do the ring and pinion swap myself but they dont sell any gears for this year of axle.

Thanks for the help.
