About to do oil change, think this is the right oil to be using?

I've been searching for a comprehensive list of fluid specs but haven't seen it all in one place. Seems 15W-40 is being used by a number of people and this Mobil Delvac is formulated for Diesel engines. Ok to use? Putting a WIX filter on by the way. Will probably be doing a short mileage oil change, maybe a couple hundred miles to flush the oil passages. I don't know the Mtx schedule this truck had before me. Thanks all. |
Yep.. looks good to me.. I still like my Shell Rotella 5w40 syn.. however.. You can extend your oil changes and have a quieter running engine, with quicker starts when it is cold..

The Delo oil you have pictures is being used by many on this forum in their 7.3s, the Wix filter is also being used by some as well-some report their engines like the Delo oil better than anything else-we all recomend staying AWAY from FRAM filters.
I personally run Shel Rotella 5w40 Synthetic with a Purolator "PURE ONE" filter. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the FL-1995 Motorcraft filter available at Walmart for under 10 bucks. |
Here is the spec's on the Delvac:

Oil looks good. I wouldn't bother with the short oil change. Maybe suck the oil out of the hpop reservoir for a more complete oil change. Then fill it back up. This will get about an extra quart out. You will still have 1-2 quarts in the system but I wouldn't worry about it.

Delvac is just fine!

I ran the same for over 120,000 miles, switched to Syn about 50,000 miles ago. Good oil.

Shell 5w-40w Rotella T6 here also with Mobil 1 or Motorcraft oil filter.

Are you able to get that oil at any parts store?? I only remember seeing the Rotella 15-40

I've always heard the same thing about Fram filters. WIX has always been near the top of my list but the Walmart Motorcraft may make it into the mix, the one that came off was a Motorcraft.
I was more concerned that the weight of 15W-40 being correct. For the warm weather here in SoCal, I'm guessing it's ok. If I end up in cooler temps, I'm guessing 5W-40 would be appropriate? To suck out the HPOP, I do have an oil sucker. I'm guessing that you can suck it out through the gold colored plug that needs an allen key to remove that is in the top of the HPOP? Suck out what you can then refill to the top with fresh oil? Does the HPOP oil circulate at all, or once it gets to the HPOP, lines and out to the injectors it deadheads? Thanks all for the info |
Many use Synth for lower temps, I think some run it year round. As for the HPOP, yes, you can suck the oil out of the top and yes it does get circulated. The LPOP refills the HPOP as needed. Yes you can and should refill the HPOP once emptying it. It should be no less then about an inch from the top.

I've already run the engine long enough to see the oil pressure come up and top off the filter so I could check the oil lever again. I'm guessing the HPOP is sill mostly dirty oil after a few seconds of running and worth sucking out.
Thanks. |
Also remember to fill up the oil filter before replacement. The oil filter alone will hold about a quart of oil.
The HPOP and two fuel rails will hold about 3 quarts of oil. |
