is a turbo on a 6.9 idi or 7.3 idi really worth it?

Since i owned my first IDI more than a year ago Ive been looking at Turbo kits and i dont see what all the hype is. Yeah a power gain of almost 200 (hp and tq combined) but are they nessicery, I pull alot of weight somtimes upwards of 20,000lbs with mine and its slugish yes but is the extra hp, tq and pick up worth 1800 dollars?

not to me its not.guess like you,i don't mind it being a bit sluggish on the hills when loaded (just the way a loaded truck has always been for me so im used to revving her up pre-hill lol.)
however, there are many used turbos for sale all the time for well under a grand.
they do claim there's a mpg increase though.im more interested in one for this aspect than i am for more grunt.

YES! it makes a world of difference. different kits do different gains. i went with the factory turbo. i got a complete running turbo engine for 650 and just traded over all the turbo stuff. engine is worth about 500 so i got the turbo for 150. you dont notice much on street driving, but towing its a total change. especially hills. i gained 15mph on a 6% grade pulling 14k on 37" tires. thats before the intercooler and before ats 3" turn down and down pipe.

also went from 12mpg loaded to 16-17mpg

75Three90 05-22-2010 11:19 PM

ive also heard you can use one off a powerstroke but idk how hard it would be

johnboggs21 05-22-2010 11:21 PM

using a powerstroke takes a heck of a lot of work from what Ive heard. Ive considered trying to rig a PSD turbo to work before, and decided it wasnt worth the headache.

thats impressive gains right there.i like the sounds of that.
i can hit 16/17 empty due to my bed.i keep thinking of doing something like a roof mounted air deflector.but i think its the sides that causing so much drag.still, every bit will help.

dually/hydroboost/front fenders & paint/toolboxes.

if i were to go new.id be calling ATS and asking about the 3000 made for the IDI now.

oreocreaming 05-22-2010 11:44 PM

ok, ive done lift, tires and wheels, dynamat and full new interior, 100 gallon in bed reserve tank, onboard air, intercooler, hydraulic steering assist, a million other things and the #1 upgrade i made was hydroboost! do it... worth 10x the cost.

Once you have a Turbo, you'll never look back, I would also do the new ATS 3000 if I was going new, I'm to cheap for new!
