2 wheel drive tranny work in a 4x4 truck?
 

There is a good deal on e4od from a 97 2x4 diesel that I may buy for my 4x4. Will this work on my truck or is there a tail housing that can be swapped over? Thank you

no sir, the 2 wheel trannies have a difference/ longer? output shaft i do belive, you can swap them over if your real good at rebuilding the tricky mofos. but in my opinon, just find a 4x4 tranny!

If I am not mistaken, the 2-wheel drive E4OD's dont have a transferable tail housing that can be swapped out to fit a married transfer case. Most likely if a person wants to use a 2-wheel drive transmission for their 4-wheel drive, you will have to buy a seperated transfer case (or divorced as its called) and work the bugs out on the drive line between the transmission and transfer case.

The older models (60's,70's,80's) had the option of a married unit or divorced unit. New Process made both models, and the seperated units were easier to service along with the trannys.

I pulled my E4OD 2-wheel drive out, and looking at it, I was curious if a person could add the transfer case to it. I have the E4OD with transfer. There appeared to be a huge difference between the two housings, including tranny length before mounting up to the transfer case, so much of one, that it was quite obvious that most of the transmission housing would have to be swapped if a person wanted to do this, to make it conceivable.

I don't know , but most likely you'll need to change something. I find it hard to imagine you can simply replace the tail housing with your transfer case housing. If you have the Ford drivetrain manual there are detailed assembly drawings, if there are different parts they would be listed.

I do know the 5 spd manual tranny's are different internally - longer mainshaft for 4x4.

Damn one for sale recently rebuilt and up graded internals with torque converter for $500. Been nice to have a backup.

A 2wd transmission will work in a 4x4 if you change the extension housing and output shaft. Both parts can be swapped. The extension housing is dead easy, the output shaft requires a complete disassembly of the transmission to swap. It can be done, but you need to know how to build an automatic trans to do it.

You can, as long as you also disassemble the transmission and change the output shaft.

Do I pulled a transmission out of a 90 f150 two wheel drive, and it mounted up perfectly to my 89 f150 four wheel drive with only a few modifications. Everything is back together now and the truck runs, my clutch engages, but the transmission doesn't seem to want to grab a great, yet it tries to grab reverse. What's the problem here?

Did you change the output shaft in the transmission to a 4x4 output shaft? If not the output shaft isn't going to engage the transfer case.

Could the input shaft be different as well? They both came off of the 4.9 L6 engine

No, the input shafts are the same.

I have a c6 4x4 tranny for a 390, need to swap for a c6 4x2 tranny for a 390. all new clutch packs, seal rings, bushings.
