i got a butt load of edlebrock stickers i can put on mine from when i went on a field trip to bristol dragway back about 4 or 5 years ago

any way.... i guess its kinda obvious that a 302 will not make a good off road 4x4 motor

u need one with low end torque

ah screw it the OP probably isnt reading this anymore

ROFl Mr. Lew.. I didn't mean anything bad by it. Trust me, if I had the knowledge [and funds] I'd have a 350 horse 300 under my hood.

Actually, I think a 302 would make a great off roading engine. It's short and square, which is good for oil flow when it comes to messing with the frame, plus the engine loves to rev - Which is great for throwing off mud.

I think you would want to set it up for low end torque, though, yes. Long tube headers and really low gearing.

The 302 doesn't get enough credit as an off roading motor.

Conanski 05-01-2010 01:50 PM

Yes a 302 could do the job.. it just needs a chunk more gearing than any other motor.

haha wow i didnt think id get all these comments im lookn to make an original little daily driver start turning some heads and of coarse i wana feel some good **** when i want to stomp on the gas haha

If it were me, I would stick to the 33 inch tires. I wouldn't go any larger.

Build your 302 for low end torque. Get a good cam to compliment low end power, long tube headers with full length tail pipes and 4.56 gears.

do a diy turbo kit with a mp70!

pats302 05-04-2010 01:57 PM

where can i find some long tube headers thatll fit my truck? i though i couldnt have LTs on my bodystyle

6CylBill 05-04-2010 02:05 PM

Pat, I'm not sure man. I don't have a 302 and I've never dealt with headers. Why can't you fit long tubes on your body style????

Bob Gervais 05-04-2010 02:13 PM

Most likely thinking emissions related Bill. Which, could be a problem depending on what state he lives in, and how they do their emissions testing.

Pat, Summit Racing - High Performance Car and Truck Parts l 800-230-3030 , JEGS Performance Auto Parts - Holley - Billet Specialties - Edelbrock - MSD - Moroso - Mr Gasket Should have some choices for you. I haven't done LT's, but there's a lot of folks here that have. I'm sure they'll be along to help out where they can.

6CylBill 05-04-2010 02:26 PM

Great post Bob. Yeah, if he lives in Cali, I don't think he can run any kind of headers.

That's the problem Bill.. there is no building a 302 to make "good" low end power. No matter what naturally aspirated(not blown)combo you put together it's a 90lb weakling at low rpms compared to every other available engine including the 300I6, so the only option is to gear the truck to keep the motor in the healthy end of the powerband, which is above 2500rpm.

lew52 05-04-2010 03:17 PM

And the best way to do that is with rear end gearing , trans gearing like the 4R70W & a torque converter......Lew

Paul, I don't think this guy hits the mud holes going five mph. I'm under the impression he's younger and full of vinegar. With that said, I think a 302 is just right for him.. Rev the heck out of it and hit the mud going 30! That's why I told him not to go over 33 inch tires and gear it with 4.56's, to help with the overal power of the truck.

I agree with you, the 302 isn't the best choice for low end grunt work, but it is a powerful motor and pretty tough. I think it'll get the job done for this guy. For the slower guys like myself, I don't mind crawling through a mud pit - where a 300 would be a better choice.

Truth is, a 351 is best suited for off roading, but his 302 will do just fine if he gears it right and doesn't go nuts with the tire size!

pats302 05-04-2010 09:02 PM

well the reason i cant have LTs apparently the frame and tranny gets in the way of the rest of the pipes...

i cant believe you read me like that! haha i do fly threw mud pits!! haha!
